Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (21 November 1768 12 February 1834) was a German Reformed theologian, philosopher, and biblical scholar known for his attempt to reconcile the criticisms of the Enlightenment with traditional Protestant Christianity. He also became influential in the evolution of higher criticism, and his work forms part of the foundation of the modern field of hermeneutics. Because of his profound effect on subsequent Christian thought, he is often called the "Father of Modern Liberal Theology" and is considered an early leader in liberal Christianity. The neo-orthodoxy movement of the twentieth century, typically (though not without challenge) seen to be spearheaded by Karl Barth, was in many ways an attempt to challenge his influence. As a philosopher he was a leader of German Romanticism. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

True Christianity: Theology and Modern Society in Lutheran Pietism A book that, in line with the author's previous works, investigates the peculiarity of Lutheran pietism beyond the usual historiographical clichés, in the effort to bring out, alongside the actual religious consistency, the theological and historical scope of movement in which the reference to the interiority of the faith is not resolved in any way in the alleged "intimism" of the ideal of evangelical purity, but works concretely for the diffusion of the Europeans. Resonance. Already spelting in the legacy of the late medieval mysticism (and especially in Taulero) the theological premises that, through Jakob Boehme, Silesio and other "modern" mystics, would have led to the taking in shape of the pietist experience as an operative exercise of spirituality and the search for "true Christianity", the study analytically focuses on the figure and work of the great masters such as Spener and Francke - of particular interest to the Church. -universalistic of Zinzendorf and the mystical theology He Swaven, destined, especially with Oetinger, to innervate in the depths the most vivid themes of German idealism. Catholic Evangelism (14th-17th Centuries) : The volume collects a series of studies on a theological current of Western Christianity that has remained in the shadows since the first decades of the 17th century with the increasingly clear establishment of ecclesiastical institutional structures. Current called here "Catholic evangelism" to indicate its permanent recourse to biblical sources, in particular to Jewish prophecy and wisdom, to the canonical gospels and to Paul's letters. Starting from the 14th century, alongside the more well-known vicissitudes of official ecclesiastical structures and their complicated relationships with civil powers, a theology of this kind arises, extremely distrustful of both. The problems of individual conversion, of the primacy of the interior conscience, of moral coherence dominate there. And the figure of the evangelical Jesus is a paradigm of reference. This current is inspired in an explicit and increasingly widely documented way by the biblical exegesis of the fathers of the East and the West, by the conceptual and practical traditions of monastic and Franciscan theology. Various historical European libraries offer vast book testimonies of this spiritual direction, focused on the immediacy of the divine word witnessed in Scripture and addressed to individual conscience. Historical compendium of Christian theology in the first & second millennium, with its riches, its travails, the painful fragmentation into different orthodoxies, today engaged in a dialogue of reconciliation. For monastic theology, meditation on Scripture, the celebration of the Christian mysteries, moral asceticism, affective mysticism, eschatological expectation are the path to the celestial Jerusalem. The mendicant orders want to renew the evangelism of the origins, accept the challenge of secular science and build school systems. An increasingly restless Christianity in need of reform and the reference to Scripture lead to painful lacerations. The late Tridentine reaction outlines the secular characteristics of Roman Catholicism, as opposed to the northern rebellions. But for many, reason and history are the only criteria for judging the legacy of the past, while the gospel itself is against Christians only in name. Economic, legal and cultural upheavals, totalitarian ideologies and world conflicts put Christian traditions to the test. The Second Vatican Council marks the season of updating and ecumenical awareness. The moral freedom and material well-being of the ancient Christian peoples contrast with widespread spiritual distress and the misery of a large part of humanity. In the world of technology and mass phenomena, Christianity, together with other religions, seeks the path of the human heart, always full of contradictions. Among the protagonists of a long journey appear Anselm, Bernard, Hugh, Abelard, Joachim, Francis, Bonaventure, Thomas, Duns Scotus, Dante, Ockham, Catherine of Siena, Valla, Cusano, Ficino, Savonarola, Erasmus, Luther, Zwingli, Calvin , Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Suárez, Bellarmino, Cornelio a Lapide, Spener, Schleiermacher, Rosmini, Manzoni, Leo XIII, Harnack, Troeltsch, Bultmann, Barth, Bonhoeffer, John XXIII, up to the most recent interpreters of the ecumene Christian.
