Ossian is the narrator and supposed author of a cycle of poems which the Scottish poet James Macpherson claimed to have translated from ancient sources in the Scots Gaelic. He is based on Oisín, son of Finn or Fionn mac Cumhaill, a character from Irish mythology. Although the poems were well-received, many critics voiced concerns about their authenticity, a debate that continued into the 20th century. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Hardcover.

Vorwort im ersten Band, je Band ein Verzeichnis der Eigennamen mit Gälischem Originalnamen und dessen Aussprache. Außerdem je Epos eine kurze Einleitung. Ossian ist der angebliche Autor von altgälischen Gesängen und Epen aus der keltischen Mythologie. Die Gesänge des Ossian" hat in Wirklichkeit der Schotte James Macpherson (17361796) geschrieben. Als Vorbild für den angeblichen Verfasser suchte er sich Oisín aus, den Sohn des Fionn mac Cumhail. Inhalt der Gesänge sind episch dargestellte Schlachten und die Schicksale auserwählter edler Helden, die sich meist um die Rettung von Königreichen bemühen.
