Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Since the limnological research on the man-made Brokopondo Reservoir in the 'sixties, numerous data have been collected on the ecology of Surinam rivers and swamps. This book is a compilation of these data: it is the first comprehensive survey of the aquatic ecology of one of the peripheral areas of Amazonia. The geomorphology of the country, situated on the Guyana Shield, is the main factor determining the limnological properties of rivers and creeks. This results in an overall picture that is quite different from Amazonia. The emphasis of The Ecosystems of Suriname is on the living aquatic resources, including aquatic and swamp vegetation, phyto and zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Although most of Suriname is still in a pristine state, the human impact on fresh waters is considerable in those areas of rapid economic development, emphasizing the necessity of conservation measures, specially tailored for aquatic ecosystems. The Ecosystems of Suriname is a valuable acquisition for all scientists, environmental managers and others interested in tropical aquatic ecology.

Suriname has a long history of faunal inventories, with many of its species already described by Linnaeus. Despite that, the amphibians were only treated in a few papers in scientific journals. Amphibians of Suriname is the first overview of our present knowledge of this interesting group for Suriname. The book presents short descriptions and data on the distribution and natural history of the 104 species now known for the country. Most species are illustrated by one or more photographs, and a distribution map is presented as well. Two new species and two new subspecies of frogs are described for Suriname, and for several species a contribution to the taxonomic discussion is given. Leiden. E. J. Brill. 376 pp., 309 color photos, color illustrations and color distribution maps, 10 tables, br. gr. 8 [15.5 x 23.5 cm].

Crocodilians can hardly be regarded the ideal model organisms to investigate population processes; they are too large, reprodruce too slowly and are too difficult to handle. Nonetheless, of all the top predators they are the most suited: <their poikilothermic physiology enables high population densities, thereby increasing (the chance of) intra- and interspecific competition. Ecological theories predict that interspecific competition between predators will be intense. The case study presented in this book concerns the first comprehensive study ever carried out on niche segregation and competition in crocodilians. The three species of crocodilians (Caiman crocodilus, Paleosuchus trigonatus, Paleosuchus palpebrosus) studied live in Suriname, a country still covered by immens, almost pristine areas of tropical rainforest. The chance of inerspecific competition between these three species is even more enhanced by their morphological similarity and their syntopic occurence in many areas. A case is presented which shows the complexity of a community consisting of only two or three members; a complexity stemming from the complicated life history of the organism concerned and the dynamics of the ecosystem it lives in. Amsterdam. SPB Academic Publishing. 139 pp., num. b/w photographs and diagrams, br. gr. 8 [16 x 24 cm] [with a book plate from the library of Ludwig Trutnau].
