This somewhat scattershot inclusions are how the publisher executed the series, presumably to encourage ongoing and encompassing attention from the subscribers. A scarce form of Knight's editing, and one claimed by the probably-not-unbiased Virtue & Yorston to be "The Best Edition of Shakspere Published" (referring to the entire subscription series of 48 numbers). (The reference is to the Italian diplomat and art collector Vittorio Emanuele Taparelli d'Azeglio (1816-1890), who was for a time President of the Burlington Fine Arts Club.) Robinson is enclosing a copy of the rules and list of members (not present), and Beck's 'subscription of One Guinea, due on election, may be paid according to the slip sent herewith'. He requests an acknowledgement of 'this communication' at Beck's 'earliest convenience'.

Two pages, 12mo, bifolium, good condition. He acknowledges his letter about "Mr Andrew Baillie's collection at Antwerp. I know the pictures but had not heard of the day of sale. I cannot possibly leave England at the time. This is not however of much consequence for, without at all meaning to disparage the collection, there are but few things in it which I should consider eligible. [.]" He presumably doesn't think much of interest to the National Gallery. I have found no information about this Sale.

Three pages, 12mo, bifolium, good condition, docketed on p.[4] "1852 | C R Leslie RA". He extends an invitiation for Mrs Gardiner to visit "before two oclock" when he will with pleasure "give her such information and assistance as I can respecting models." He continues with insights into his own works: "My faces & figures are sometimes painted from firends, sometimes from members of my own family but [some?] often from hired models, who do not, however, supply [dresses?]. These I make up as I can, & sometimes borrow them from Nathan in [?] Street [theatrical costumier?]. | Many thanks for your kind compliance with my request for the loan of some of your beautiful Constables. If you could allow the 'Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Garden' to take the place of one or two of those you mention, I should feel greatly obliged;- but I hope soon to have the pleasure of waiting on you, and therefore [?] you will not be [at?] the trouble of writing about it.".

Portrait: 34.5 x 20 cm. Laid down on a piece of paper of the same size. Good: a little dusty and with unobtrusive 1.5 cm closed tear to left margin, and minor traces of previous mounting on reverse. Very good reproduction, on photographic paper of a complex, ghostly scene in a moonlit graveyard, with a number of supernatural figures among the graves. Decorative border with elongated skeletons. In the centre of the design is a crooked gravestone, roughly 14 x 8 cm, illuminated by a witch with a lantern, on which are written, in Furse's hand, the 'Hors D'Oeuvres', with Furse's inscription in pencil at the foot. Unlike the rest of the design, Furse's signature and inscription to Brabazon are undoubtedly original. No other copy yet traced. See Image.

Original handcolored lithograph 20 1/2 x 14 5/8 inches [52.07 x 37.18 cm], tissue quard attached and accompanied with the 2 pp. text. Lower left blank corner is creased with a short closed tear, not affecting the image. A near fine example. The lithographic print was made by Lehman & Duval after a painting by Charles Bird King. Beneath the title is printed "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1836 by E. C. Biddle, in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the Eastern District of Pa." It was issued as a plate in the three folio volume work by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall, HISTORY OF THE INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA.
