    See his entry in the Oxford DNB, with that of the recipient Lady [Maria] Theresa Lewis (1803-1865), who lived in Kent House in Knightsbridge with her second husband Sir George Cornewall Lewis (1806-1863), Bart, Liberal Chancellor of the Exchequer, her first husband having been the novelist Thomas Henry Lister (1800-1842). The three items are in good condition, lightly aged. Written in a difficult hand. ONE (13 June 1850, 'Rolls House'): AL in the third person. 1p, 12mo. 'Sir F. Palgrave presents his compts', and informs her that something has been found in a certain book, and that 'a copy shall be made for her as soon as possible'. TWO (14 May 1851): ALS. 2pp, 12mo. Copies are being made of the three patents she enquired after. 'With regard to the Arbitration we have not been so successful, as you will see by Mr. D[?]'s note enclosed. Signed 'Francis Palgrave'. THREE (5 February 1852): ALS. 1p, 12mo. Signed 'F. Palgrave' and addressed to 'My dear Lady Theresa. Begins by explains that he is transmitting an order 'made by the Master of the Rolls for facilitating literary enquiries.' The rest of the letter is somewhat opaque. See Image.

Ex-library with property stamp to title and two others pages, otherwise internally clean. $350. * This work explores the historical role and power of the King's Council in England. It focuses on the origins of the King's Council and investigates the initial authority of this body in English governance. It emphasizes the significance of ancient Parliamentary petitions as primary sources to understand England's constitutional history. Palgrave's work is considered a significant resource for studying the development of English constitutional history. This copy was inscribed by the author to John Rickman Esq", the highly-influential political operative and wide-ranging British intellectual John Rickman, Esq., F.R.S. (1771-1840). As a statistician and public servant, Rickman was widely honoured. He was elected FRS in 1815 and an honorary member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1835. In 1820 Oxford University awarded him an honorary LLD, and in 1833 he was elected an honorary member of the Societe Francaise de Statistique Universelle. Francis Palgrave, born Francis Ephraim Cohen, (1788-1861) was an English archivist, historian and author.
