Hardcover. 2 volumes. 4to., (10 6/8 x 8 4/8 inches). 6-page list of subscribers at end of volume II. Additional engraved title-page, engraved full-page map of the Environs of Constantinople; with the Thracian Bosporus, two portraits and 84 plates after W.H.Bartlett (one or two small spots). Contemporary black morocco, elaborately decorated in gilt, all edges gilt (extremities a little scuffed). Provenance: from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 334. First edition, bound from the original parts, of this classic of 19th-century travel. In 1835 Pardoe accompanied her father to Constantinople, and at the "time it was felt that no woman apart from Lady Mary Wortley Montagu had acquired so intimate a knowledge of Turkey. In 1837 Pardoe published 'The City of the Sultan and Domestic Manners of the Turks'. The book was very successful, and was reprinted in three volumes in 1838, 1845, and 1854. Aiming to disabuse Europeans of their 'ideal of Oriental mysteriousness, mysticism, and magnificence' (vol. 1, p. 89), it offered what was hitherto 'probably the most detailed, most sympathetic description of the Turkish élite' (Melman, 50). There followed in rapid succession 'The Beauties of the Bosphorus' (1838, new editions in 1854 and 1874), 'The River and the Desart, or, Recollections of the Rhône and the Chartreuse' (1838), and 'The City of the Magyar, or, Hungary and her Institutions in 1839-40' (1840). The latter was remarkable for its comprehensive research into Hungarian economic and political life; less florid in style than its predecessors, it also induced Elizabeth Barrett to praise Pardoe's 'word-painting' (Letters of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 328)" (Elizabeth Lee, rev. Joanne Wilkes for DNB).
