Extensive experimentation established that pyrite creates enough heat to bring coal to the critical point at which oxygen absorption accelerates dangerously. Spontaneous combustion can occur in a number of geological contexts, but this author focuses on the practical issue of stockpiled coal. While the author's focus is on coal types from Illinois, the work's insights are applicable to other geological formations. This is an important and useful book for anyone interested in coal storage, as it provides a new understanding of the role of pyrite and the importance of careful storage to prevent potentially catastrophic outcomes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
