Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book probes complex questions surrounding the decreasing value of American farmlands, contextualizing them within the broader economic and social transformations of the late 19th century. It challenges prevailing notions that transportation costs are the sole cause of decline, and delves into the intricate interplay between farming practices, technological advancements, changing consumer patterns, and the rise of industrial capitalism. This book examines how new transportation systems influenced regional markets while also acknowledging the role of factors such as falling crop prices, increased competition, and shifting agricultural techniques. The author astutely analyzes how these developments shaped the livelihoods and communities of American farmers, offering a nuanced understanding of the challenges they faced during this pivotal era. Ultimately, this book provides a rich and nuanced account of the transformation of American agriculture, shedding light on the factors that contributed to the decline in farmland values and the profound impact it had on rural life. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition. collates xiii including frontispiece photographic portrait, 376, 9 pp. index. Publisher's teal cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front board. A bit cocked and the blank FFE appears to have been excised, meaning book now opens to the blank recto of the frontispiece portrait. A scarce title, and important pioneer record of New Mexico, printed in a small edition on the press of the New Mexico Spanish and English Mission. (Back in the 1960s, Van Allen Bradley of the Chicago Daily News catalogued a copy of this book, already uncommon, as "Life of Mrs. Fmily J. Harwood," insisting he saw a capital "F" where the "E" would usually be expected. Whether he had in hand a test printing with a typesetting error soon corrected, or a later copy from plates on which the tail of the "E" had eroded, we do not know.) "In 1869 Bishop Edward R. Ames appointed (the Rev. Thomas) Harwood to New Mexico, where he and his wife served together for nearly thirty-three years, until Emily's death in 1902. In a community that was predominately Roman Catholic, the Harwoods successfully established several Methodist schools. In particular, a school for girls was opened in the early 1870s. By 1886, the Harwoods had founded six elementary schools and two academies. In 1879 Harwood founded a devotional periodical, El Abogado Cristiano, with articles in both English and Spanish. Additionally, Harwood published Spanish-language Sunday school lessons and religious tracts. After Emily's death, Dr. Harwood assisted in writing the biography of his late wife, and wrote a two-volume "History of New Mexico Spanish and English Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church" from 1850 to 1910 -- both works published by his own El Abogado Press" -- Howes K49. 385 pp. including Index. Reduced from $1,000.
