Peeters, Louvain (.), 2004. IX,586p. Paperback. Upper corner front cover slightly creased. May require extra shipping costs: weight including packing from 1 - 2 Kg. 'Manliness, prowess, deeds of valour, excellence: 'virtus' is a term which has a broad semantic range, which differs significantly from the meanings attached to such modern notions as the English 'virtue' or the French 'vertu'. Although deeply rooted in a system of practices and discourses aimed at continuing the 'mos maiorum', the traditional concept of 'virtus' underwent serious changes in the course of time: it was reconsidered, reassessed, and even replaced with new definitions of moral excellence. The editors of the present volume have sought to gather contributions which shed new light on the ancient representation of moral excellence or discuss relevant aspects of the rich but complex 'Wirkungsgeschichte' of the Roman concept of 'virtus'. Thematically coherent, the book testifies to the rich variety of approaches currently adopted in classical philology, ancient history, Early Christian and Byzantine Studies, and the study of Latin texts from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Augustine of Hippo was one of the first authors to give rise to the needfor anthologies devoted to a single author. Today, over a hundredflorilegia dedicated solely to Augustines writings are known. Over thecourse of the Middle Ages, several of these collections provedinstrumental in giving access to the Bishop of Hippos large oeuvre, andin determining the direction of its reception. In fourteenchapters, this volume presents some important Augustinian florilegia, their sources, composition, context, afterlife, and the challengesinherent in editing and studying them. Beginning in Late Antiquity, withVincent of Lerins and Prosper of Aquitaine, the volume discusses severalmedieval and early modern florilegia, both well-known and more marginal, and concludes with their use by Augustines modern editors. Brepols, Turnhout, 2008. CXCVII,195P. Original terra-cotta gilt stamped cloth. With gift intention from the editor on half title. Series: Corpus Christianorum, Series Latina, XLI Ba (Aurelii Augustini Opera, Pars XI, 7). (Publisher's information).

Hardback, 403 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503531922. The Sermones ad populum are a part of Augustine's work that, especially in its relation to the rest of the Augustinian corpus, deserves more attention. Frequently studied topics are the transmission of the sermons, the bishop's homiletic methodology, his use of Scripture and classical rhetoric, his view on the episcopate, his theology of proclamation and his opinions about the cult of the martyrs. Augustine's sermons also serve as an invaluable source for the study of the North African Church and its liturgical practices at the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth century. The dating and the chronology of the sermons have likewise been the object of many publications. As a matter of fact, they are still much debated. On May 29-31, 2008, the research units History of Church and Theology and Literary Studies: Latin Literature of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven organized an international conference on Augustine's Sermones ad populum in collaboration with the Scientific Committee of the Series Latina of Corpus Christianorum (Brepols Publishers), the Revue benedictine (Maredsous) and the Augustinian Historical Institute (Heverlee). The conference was intended to bring together scholars who have recently made important contributions to the study of Augustine's work in general and his preaching in particular, as well as specialists in the field of Early Christian homiletics.
