Jahrhunderts war ein religiöses Erbauungs- und Gebetbuch, das Gläubigen in Zeiten von Krankheit, Leid oder Todesnähe geistlichen Beistand schenken sollte. Es enthielt zumeist Gebete, Bibeltexte, Betrachtungen und Lieder, die Trost spendeten und zur Vorbereitung auf ein christliches Sterben anleiteten. Typisch war ein pastoral-tröstender Ton, der Hoffnung auf Gottes Barmherzigkeit und das ewige Leben vermittelte. Häufig standen auch Texte zur Beichte, Kommunion und Sterbebegleitung darin.
