Wrappers with flaps.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed to his first wife on the title-page with the pet name the couple used: ''For Loïs with fondest love from DISRAELI''. The previous year Hamilton had divorced Loïs; he continued to inscribe books to her, despite having remarried shortly thereafter. Loosely inserted is a Typed Letter Signed by BBC producer E.J. King Bull, dated 2nd October, 1952, and on the headed writing paper of the BBC: about 90 words to Patrick Hamilton in a positive spirit regarding a production of Money with Menaces, one of Hamilton's radio dramas, which had been broadcast a week earlier. This information is not mentioned in the letter but emerges from some internet digging. The BBC also produced a television version of The Man Upstairs in 1954.Backstrip defective at head with loss to the title. Very good.

Add to basketFour privately published collections of poetry, undated, but printed sometime between 1934 and 1951 based upon the dated inscriptions, all being signed and inscribed by the author, Hans Patrick Hamilton [1889-1967]. Not to be confused with his more famous namesake, though as he dropped the name "Hans", probably during WW1 due to anti-German sentiment, it is an easy mistake to make. The Seekers is hardbound in paper covered boards, the other three are string-bound in card wraps. The Seekers is somewhat marked and bowed, the others are in better condition, slightly rubbed, toned and foxed. The poems tend to focus on religious and patriotic subjects, with some military references. Hamilton served in the R.A.F. during WW2 and one of the inscriptions is to a Corporal J. Sparks. All are unsurprisingly quite rare.

First Edition. Octavo (20cm); light grey pictorial cloth stamped in dark green and orange; vii,[3],99,[1],[1](ad)pp. Inscribed by the author on the front pastedown: "Otto D. Donnell / I want you to read the / last chapter and ask / your good wife to read the / first. I want to make her / laugh and [next two lines illegible] / With compliments of the author / Pat Q. Tangent." Mild wear to spine ends, two small stains to board edges, with four small bruises to spine panel, resulting in minor loss to cloth and some board exposure; Good to Very Good. Utopian work which begins with the deportation from the United States and Canada to the "Old World" all precious metals and forms of currency, as well as "all persons who are unwilling to do, with their hands or brain, their fair share of all the service, of every sort and description, necessary to produce and distribute the necessaries and comforts of life, and beautify, improve and adorn this North American continent." This copy with an interesting inscription to Donnell, the second generation head of the Findlay headquartered Ohio Oil Company (known today as Marathon Petroleum). The unhinged nature of the work, the author's public break with reality, along with the nearly illegible and cryptic nature of the inscription raises speculation as to whether the book was ever presented to the recipient, or whether their relationship, too, may have been fantasized.
