Made in private between 1984 and 1999 and kept mostly to herself for more than thirty years, the images in Tender comprise a complete, personal self-portrait of a young, queer, Black woman intimately exploring the realm of her own possibility. When Williams was eighteen and studying photography at Princeton, she began making the black and white and color portraits in Tender to create pictures in her own image. Her mind was filled equally with the canonical images of the medium's male-driven history and the posing women discovered during her youth in her father's pornography collection. Using her own body, Williams created the portraits she had never seen before. Made with instant Polaroid 35mm and 4x5 type 55 film formats, Williams profited from the near instant result to continuously play with her own expression and form. An act of tender commune with herself, these are every version of the artist on full display: provocative, playful, sensual, gentle, powerful, mean, glamorous, forlorn, funny. The photographs in Tender are ignited with the raw energy of a young artist on the cusp of adulthood and her own burgeoning sexual identity. This table top sculpture is as much art object as it is box set. The custom made set is a 30 lb. steel, glass and fabric object that reflects the rusty and jagged detritus that repeatedly appears in Brodie's images. The print is mounted on 1/8" cold rolled steel. Signed and numbered on verso, it is a 11 x 13 in. C- Type print on Kodak F-Surface paper. It nests perfectly in a carefully and deliberately rusted steel frame with intentionally chunky welds. On top of the print sits a signed first edition book wrapped in a screen printed dust jacket on 75 lb. butcher paper. The colophon, printed directly on a piece of American flag that no longer flies, sits beneath the finishing touch, a 1/4" piece of tempered glass that has been mirrored and etched individually. A reverse sandblasting process was first applied to the glass that allows the title to exist as negative space, allowing the red stripe of the American flag below it to glow through as testament of Brodie's contribution to photography. Instead the train went in the opposite direction to Jacksonville, FL. Days later, Brodie rode the same train home, arriving back where he started. Nonetheless, it sparked something and Brodie began to wander across the U.S. by any means that were free - walking, hitchhiking and train hopping. Shortly after, Brodie found a Polaroid camera stuffed behind a car seat. With no training in photography, the instant camera was an opening for Brodie to document his experiences. As a way of staying in touch with his transient community, Brodie shared his pictures on various websites gaining the moniker "The Polaroid Kidd" [sic]. When the Polaroid film he used was discontinued, Brodie switched to 35mm film and a sturdy 1980s camera.
