Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 200 stamp-numbered (#101-300 from the total edition of 300), slipcased copies of Tones and Dirt and Bone (published by Twin Palms Publishers, but specially packaged for this limited edition by TBW Books), signed and inscribed "Oakland, U.S.A. / TBW Books, 2015" on the title page by Brodie. The book is contained in a heavy, multi-paneled, screenprinted and die-cut chipboard slipcase that reveals the book's cover plate. An additional 100 copies of this slipcased edition were reserved for the TBW Books' Special Limited Edition (with 2 Type-C Prints), so the total edition size as noted on the slipcase is 300. The book: Tones of Dirt and Bone was published in a trade edition of 3000 unnumbered copies by Twin Palms Publishers (2015). First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated paper-covered boards with title printed in black on quarter-bound gray linen spine; with clear acetate dust jacket. Photographs and text by Mike Brodie. Includes a list of plates. Designed and edited by Mike Brodie, Paul Schiek and Jack Woody. 88 pp., with 48 four-color plates and 2 additional illustrations (one by Paul Schiek). 11-5/8 x 10-1/4 inches. New in publisher's packaging. From the publisher of the Limited Editions (TBW Books): "TBW Books continues its long-established relationship with Mike Brodie with our release of the Limited Edition forTones of Dirt and Bone. Designed and produced in Oakland California, the limited edition was carefully crafted to both complement the work in the book and pair handsomely with the previous limited editions produced forA Period of Juvenile Prosperity. This edition brings together elements of Brodie's handwritten notes and images from the book to create a unique package that embodies his earliest works and TBW Books' own affinity for simple materials and refined design." From the publisher of the trade edition (Twin Palms Publishers): "The images in Tones of Dirt and Bone were made between 2004 and 2006, with a Polaroid camera and Time Zero film. Brodie used the characteristics and limitations inherent to this type of camera and film to his advantage. The portraits he made are further enhanced by the peculiar color palette of the film. Due to the restriction of manual focus and expensive film, that came only ten sheets to a box, each image feels deliberate and precious." From The Guardian: "Self-taught and naturally talented, Brodie often homes in on telling details: an adolescent neck dappled with love bites; a child's small battered boot tucked between the even more battered boots of a parent; a lone wooden cross, strewn with flowers and soft toys, with the word "SON" handwritten on it. These are the fragments he has gathered in his itinerant existence, each one a signifier of a community beyond the realms of traditional society. There is a melancholy undertow to his best pictures a sense of loss, and a sense of lives surrendered to drift, survival and danger. The objects and landscapes he photographed all carry a similar sense of mystery: a bunch of leafy flowers, or a dead bird held in an outstretched hand; a railway track or a wintery road disappearing into the horizon. Everything is bathed in the soft, nostalgic tones that made Polaroid film such an evocative medium." From the artist: "I have ridden trains over 50,000 miles and taken over 7,000 photographs. I won first place and $10,000 in a photo contest. I gave the money to my mom. I got Internet famous. I deleted my website and stopped taking photos, went back to school and became a diesel mechanic. I don't think much about being rich. I don't want to be famous but I hope this work is remembered forever." Signed by Author.

[Oakland], TBW Books, 2023. 77,[18] pp. B./w. plts. & 1 orig. photo tipped in. Softcover.Limited edition, number 1445 of 1500 copies. Signed in pencil. * the first monograph by artist Carla Williams. Made in private between 1984 and 1999 and kept mostly to herself for more than thirty years, the images in Tender comprise a complete, personal self-portrait of a young, queer, Black woman intimately exploring the realm of her own possibility. When Williams was eighteen and studying photography at Princeton, she began making the black and white and color portraits in Tender to create pictures in her own image. Her mind was filled equally with the canonical images of the medium's male-driven history and the posing women discovered during her youth in her father's pornography collection. Using her own body, Williams created the portraits she had never seen before. Made with instant Polaroid 35mm and 4x5 type 55 film formats, Williams profited from the near instant result to continuously play with her own expression and form. An act of tender commune with herself, these are every version of the artist on full display: provocative, playful, sensual, gentle, powerful, mean, glamorous, forlorn, funny. The photographs in Tender are ignited with the raw energy of a young artist on the cusp of adulthood and her own burgeoning sexual identity. Included in the book are essays by the artist and scholar Mireille Miller-Young. [Publisher].

Boxed Set. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: No dust jacket as issued. 1st Edition. SPECIAL ORDER. PRICING & AVAILABILITY SUBJECT TO CHANGE. SHIPPING NOTE: Due to size and weight, additional shipping fees apply (calculated at checkout). Box set special limited edition of 20 numbered copies (plus 5 AP), housed in a unique custom box, including a signed mounted print and signed first edition of the book. This table top sculpture is as much art object as it is box set. The custom made set is a 30 lb. steel, glass and fabric object that reflects the rusty and jagged detritus that repeatedly appears in Brodie's images. The print is mounted on 1/8" cold rolled steel. Signed and numbered on verso, it is a 11 x 13 in. C- Type print on Kodak F-Surface paper. It nests perfectly in a carefully and deliberately rusted steel frame with intentionally chunky welds. On top of the print sits a signed first edition book wrapped in a screen printed dust jacket on 75 lb. butcher paper. The colophon, printed directly on a piece of American flag that no longer flies, sits beneath the finishing touch, a 1/4" piece of tempered glass that has been mirrored and etched individually. A reverse sandblasting process was first applied to the glass that allows the title to exist as negative space, allowing the red stripe of the American flag below it to glow through as testament of Brodie's contribution to photography. ABOUT THE BOOK: First edition, first printing. Signed by Brodie. Hardcover, with screen printed dust jacket printed on 75-lb butcher paper. The jacket design originates from Brodie's handwritten notes from the afterword of the book itself. Photographs and text by Mike Brodie. 104 pp., with 60 four-color plates. 13 x 11 inches. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume III. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2014)]. As New in publisher's packaging. From the publisher of the trade edition (Twin Palms Publishers): "At 17 Mike Brodie hopped his first train close to his home in Pensacola, FL thinking he would visit a friend in Mobile, AL. Instead the train went in the opposite direction to Jacksonville, FL. Days later, Brodie rode the same train home, arriving back where he started. Nonetheless, it sparked something and Brodie began to wander across the U.S. by any means that were free - walking, hitchhiking and train hopping. Shortly after, Brodie found a Polaroid camera stuffed behind a car seat. With no training in photography, the instant camera was an opening for Brodie to document his experiences. As a way of staying in touch with his transient community, Brodie shared his pictures on various websites gaining the moniker "The Polaroid Kidd" [sic]. When the Polaroid film he used was discontinued, Brodie switched to 35mm film and a sturdy 1980s camera. Brodie spent years crisscrossing the U.S. amassing a collection, now appreciated as one of the most impressive archives of American travel photography. When asked about his approach to travel and photography Brodie has said, "sometimes I take a train the wrong way or.whatever happens a photo will come out of it, so it doesn't really matter where I end up." From the artist: "I have ridden trains over 50,000 miles and taken over 7,000 photographs.
