Dieses Buch hat eine fast hundertzwanzigjährige Geschichte: Emil Zsigmondy, einer der großen führerlosen Wiener Bergsteiger, legte mit der von ihm 1885 verfaßten Erstausgabe den Grundstein dieses Standardwerkes. Ein knappes halbes Jahr danach verunglückte er an der Meije tödlich. Sein Bruder Otto Zsigmondy und der Salzburger Alpinist und Bergführer Ludwig Purtscheller waren für die 2. u. 3 Auflage verantwortlich. Die späteren Neubearbeitungen anfangs des 20. Jahrhundert übernahm der Leipziger Wilhelm Paulcke, bis 1971 Helmut Dumler eine völlige Neubearbeitung herausgab.
