Edward Taylor Paull (1858-1924) was an American composer, publisher, and music entrepreneur best known for his dramatic marches and spectacular illustrated sheet music covers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Worked as both a composer of marches and descriptive pieces a publisher who marketed his own music. He wasn't just writing music?he was building a brand. The Real Innovation: Sheet Music as Spectacle What made Paull famous wasn't just the music?it was the presentation. His sheet music featured: large, colorful lithographed covers dramatic scenes (battles, explosions, heroic moments) bold typography These covers were designed to: grab attention in shop windows and drive sales In many cases, the cover art was as important as the music itself.

Inside the back wrap, an essay by Paull with the complete text of Longfellow's poem. ''A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door, And a word that shall echo forevermore!''.

The Roman numerals at the copyright are MDCDI and it must have been in error. I would place it at 1901. It's in poor condition and there are some large chips and large taped areas at the edge (an old 2 x almost 4 inch light brown taped part at the front fore edge, as well as a couple small pieces at the front spine edge and inner spine edge (along with edge tears). And page 5 at the bottom half is missing some of the music due to a large chip at the fore edge. About 12 x 9 with 5 pages. In POOR CONDITION and rare nonetheless. Size: 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall.
