Add to basketFirst edition. This copy is from the library of Peake Pasha and has his armorial bookplate. Peake assisted in the Palestinian expedition reported in the first paper and is mentioned on page 2. Frederick Gerard Peake (1886-1970) was the founder and first commander of the Arab Legion. He was also a friend of T. E. Lawrence, and has been called "one of the most colorful figures in the turbulent Middle East after the disintegration of the Turkish Empire" (New York Times). Peake is mentioned on page 2, in an article reporting on an early archaeological survey of the region of Transjordan. The first part of the expedition was undertaken in December 1932 as a desert-crossing from Mafraq to Kilwa, unearthing a number of artefacts and inscriptions. The authors wrote that "the expedition was indebted. to Col. F. G. Peake, CBE, head of the Arab Legion, for placing at its disposal an army truck, with a guard of an officer and six soldiers, because of the dangerous country through which the expedition passed". "Frederick Peake; Led Arab Legion", New York Times, 2 April 1970. Quarto. Folding plate, illustrations and maps in text. Original black ribbed quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, light brown paper boards, front board lettered in black. Spine ends and joints a little rubbed, tips worn, boards scuffed and stained, light offsetting: a very good copy.…

Add to basketFirst edition, first printing, by Peake Pasha, a founder of the Arab Legion. The first volume is a history of the Emirate of Transjordan (now the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan) from pre-history to 1933. The second volume includes tribal history, several tables and genealogies, short essays on each tribe, and a detailed index. Frederick Gerard Peake (1886-1970) was a British Army and police officer who commanded the Arab Legion in the Emirate of Transjordan from 1920 until his retirement in 1939. He also fought alongside T. E. Lawrence in the First World War. Lawrence described Peake in a letter of 1929 as "a very good fellow. He has stuck splendidly to three or four thankless jobs, and made a deal out of them. A hot, impatient soul, too" (Brown, p. 413). Peake notes in his preface that much of the history is "rapidly being forgotten; much has already gone beyond recall" (p. 274). He identifies a break in the oral continuity of the intangible tribal cultural heritage caused by modern education, with younger generations no longer listening "to the poems and legends of the old bards" (p. 273). With the help of a team of local Jordanians, Peake compiled a comprehensive list of the tribes of the region and their histories, including valuable information on the districts of Ajlun, Belqa', and Ma'an, hereunder Shobek (now Shoubak), Wadi Musa, and Petra. The monograph is uncommon, with just eight locations on WorldCat (additional location of volume two only at the Family History Library, Salt Lake City) and only three copies traced at auction in the past 25 years. Provenance: Vernon Cecil Wordsworth Kenyon (1905-1980), Commissioner of Lands in Aden, with his passport accompanying the volumes. Kenyon was awarded the OBE in 1966 for his service. Malcolm Brown, T. E. Lawrence: The Selected Letters, 1988. 2 vols, small folio. With 15 tribal pedigrees printed in red and green, 3 of them folding (1 loosely inserted); additional genealogical chart loosely inserted. Original light brown card wrappers, brown linen backstrips, front wrappers lettered in black, mimeographed typescript, rectos only. Bindings firm, wrappers a little creased and discoloured, brown stain to front wrapper of vol. I and discolouration to linen, vol. II with old oil stains to front wrapper and fore edge but not penetrating to text, linen a little frayed at ends, some foxing throughout, minor occasional offsetting or soiling. A very good copy.…
