A Superb Pop-Up Peep-Show Theatre A Remarkable Survival from 1884 [POP-UP PEEPSHOW]. Grand Theatre en Actions. Paris: A. Capendu, Editeur, 1884. Pauvre Robinson (Poor Robinson); Un chat comme on en voit peu (A cat that we see little of) - Trop parler nuit (Talk too much at night) and Réveillez-vous belle endormie Wake up sleeping beauty). Folio (12 5/8 x 10 1/2 inches; 320 x 267 mm.) - expanding to 43 inches - 1092 mm. A very fine Pop-up Peepshow with four fold-out panels, each with a title illustration. When the panels are raised, a series of four proscenia open up to create a perspective view such as that in a toy theatre or peepshow with printed text below. Publisher's black cloth concertina style over tan boards, pictorial color front cover. A few small unobtrusive stains on rear board and lower corner (3/4 x 1/2 inch) chipped away. Otherwise a spectacular example with nor restoration and all pop-ups in fine condition. A remarkable survival. OCLC locates just three examples in libraries and institutions worldwide: Princeton Univ (NJ, US); Pennsylvania State Library (PA, US); McGill Univ. (Montreal, Quebec). It was probably in 1855 or 1856 that Dean's began work in their new London design studios at Ludgate Hill on the first true movable books. For their new line, the designers had drawn on the peep-show principle which used cut-out figures and scenes aligned one behind the other to give a three-dimensional effect. In the Scenic Books they produced scenes relating to the stories which consisted of three 'layers' of people and background, all lying flat, face downwards on the pages. Each layer was fixed to the next by a piece of ribbon which emerged behind the uppermost portion, and when this was pulled the whole scene sprang up into perspective. The first story to be presented in this manner was Little Red Riding Hood, and its commercial success resulted in at least three other titles, Robinson Crusoe, Cinderella and Aladdin. (According to historian Percy Muir, French versions of the Scenic Books were later marketed in Paris by Maurin et Fils.) Apparently - as As we see here in our present Pop-Up Theatre, A. Capendu in Paris also published this type book.
