Second edition. 4 volumes (complete), octavo, original speckled paper over boards with old manuscript spine labels, l, 493; vi, 553; vi, 497; vi, 500 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author in first volume. All half-titles present. Boards scuffed and worn, joints splitting, cracking to paper over spine,… bookplate to pastedown of first volume, scattered foxing, stain to upper spine corner of last 20 or so pages in 4th volume. A rare full-margined copy in original boards. The masterwork of the Spanish priest and historian Juan Antonio Llorente (1756-1823). At time of publication Llorente had been living in France for a number of years - having identified with the French (Bonaparte) when the alliance between Spain and France collapsed in 1808. The work was first published in 1817 (in French, a Spanish edition was not published until 1822). Palau 145349 ("Una de las mejores y más bien documentadas historias de la Inquisición española.").
