Leather Binding. Condition: Very Good. 2 volume set, each volume with a fore-edge paiting showing a view in Rome along the Tiber, one showing Castel Sant'Angelo - originally the Mausoleum of Hadrian. Bound in full brown late 19th-century calf, spines with raised bands and gilt geometric tooling, covers bordered with a twin gilt fillet, gilt-tooled inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers (spine faded with wear; rubbing to boards; all outer hinges repaired, some with leather, come with cloth). The fore-edge views of Rome are appropriate, as Arnold's greatest literary monument is his sadly unfinished History of Rome (three volumes, 18381842).
