First compiled edition. This volume, prefaced in English, contains two French travellers' accounts of their visit to the kingdoms of England and Scotland in the 16th and 17th centuries: "The two pieces here offered to the public contain the idea which some of our neighbours formed of us in the two last centuries. The physician, in the sixteenth century, thinks he cannot set us in too contemptible a light, and with the true vanity of his nation, delivers into the hands of his master, not only this little island, but the whole world. The historiographer, in the seventeenth, flatters us a little more, but his picture of us is only a back-ground to set off his mistress" (Preface). The first text, written by physician and geographer Estienne Perlin was originally published in Paris by François Trepeau in 1558. The second text, by Jean Puget de la Serre (1600-1665), an essayist and playwright, was first published in London in 1639 by George Thomason and Octavien Pullen. Quarto (260 x 216 mm). Illustrated with one large folding engraved plate (79.5 x 31.8 cm) entitled Entrée royalle de la reyne mère du roy très chréstien dans la ville de Londres which depicts Mary de Medici's cortege filing past an Eleanor cross in 1639, providing us with a rare glimpse of a London street before the fire of 1666. Contemporary tan quarter calf, red morocco label, raised bands ruled in gilt, marbled paper sides. Armorial bookplate of Westport House on the front pastedown. Boards rubbed and bumped at corners, heavily so at bottom corners and with some surface loss, spine ends chipped, gilt bright, front and rear hinges slightly tender, light foxing, chiefly to endpapers and early leaves, plate with light offsetting and small closed tear to its hinge, not affecting the image. A very good copy.
