The book continues the adventures of the iconic anti-hero Ostap Bender, whose boundless ingenuity and ironic intelligence illuminate the contradictions of Soviet society in the late 1920s. Through a sequence of brilliantly constructed episodes, the authors expose the machinery of bureaucracy, the cult of appearances, the hunger for wealth, and the fragile psychology of ideological conformity. The novel occupies a complex historical position. After its initial success, its sharp satire of official institutions and social hypocrisy soon made it politically sensitive. During the 1930s and subsequent decades it experienced periods of restriction and partial suppression, with editorial alterations and irregular availability. Despite this, it remained immensely popular, its characters and language becoming deeply embedded in cultural memory. Ilf and Petrov combine classical picaresque structure with modern political satire, producing a work that is at once comic, philosophical, and humane. Ostap Bender stands as one of literature's great trickster figures ? perceptive, charming, morally ambiguous, and endlessly inventive ? making the novel both a historical document of its era and a timeless reflection on ambition, illusion, and survival. The copy bears indications of having originated from a complimentary or gift collection of an unidentified source. A stamp is present on the front endpaper; its provenance is unclear, though it is certainly not that of a public library. Overall good condition. Occasional spots on the third page and from the third through the seventh pages. The title page shows a tendency to detach from the text block. Otherwise in good condition.

In 1935, Russian correspondents of Pravda newspaper, Ilya Ilf and Eugene Petrov, arrived in New York on the SS Normandie. They spent ten weeks in America, crossing the country twice. In the articles and eventual book that followed, they praised the industrial and technological might of the US, and denounced the oppression of Black Americans and workers, and the treatment of Native Americans in the reservations. It became one of the most popular books ever published in the Soviet Union. Condition: This is a good copy. The black cloth is a little rubbed and marked, and bumped to the corners. The contents are in strong readable condition with secure binding. The pages have a little age-toning but remain clean.
