T., angestaubt, stockfleckig, leichte Gbrsp. - Pettenkofer, (1818 - 1901), studierte zuerst Pharmazie, bevor 1843 das Thema seiner Promotion zum Doktor der Medizin seine Neigung zur Chemie hervortreten ließ: eine pharmakologische Untersuchung über das Guacin, die auch Justus von Liebigs Beachtung fand. Ein königliches Reisestipendium ermöglichte Pettenkofer eine Labortätigkeit bei dem Würzburger Liebig-Schüler Joseph von Scherer sowie eine kurze Zusammenarbeit mit Liebig selbst in dessen Labor in Gießen. Hier gelangen Pettenkofer in kurzer Zeit eine Probe zum Nachweis von Gallensäuren im Urin (Pettenkofer-Reaktion) sowie die Entdeckung des Kreatinins als Endprodukt des Muskelstoffwechsels. 1847 als a.o.Prof. der Chemie nach München berufen und zum Hofapotheker bestellt, entwickelte sich er rasch zum Genie auf so gut wie allen Gebieten der angewandten Chemie. Durch nützliche und 'ökonomische' Untersuchungen (u.a. über Firnisveränderungen bei Gemälden der Alten Pinakothek) fand Pettenkofer zu seinem Lebenswerk: der chemisch-experimentellen Analyse von städtischen Lebensbedingungen und ihrem Einfluß auf die Gesundheit des Menschen. Nachdem er mit Carl Voit eine Respirationskammer zu Stoffwechseluntersuchungen entwickelt hatte, wandte er sich zunehmend Fragen der Kanalisation, der Heizung, Ventilation, Kleidung und Wohnung zu und legte damit den Grundstein für das Fachgebiet der Hygiene. 1865 auf den ersten deutschen Lehrstuhl für Hygiene berufen, machten ihn seine Monographien Boden und Grundwasser in ihren Beziehungen zu Cholera und Typhus (1869) und Über den Werth der Gesundheit für eine Stadt (1873) als führenden Hygieniker im In- und Ausland bekannt und führten 1879 zur Gründung des ersten Universitäts-Hygiene-Instituts in Deutschland. Das von ihm 1883 begründete "Archiv für Hygiene" lebt bis heute als "International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine" fort. (DBE).
