Bekannt wurde er als Dramatiker und Übersetzer aus dem Französischen ("Klassisches Theater der Franzosen", 4 Bde., 1819-23). - Johann Heinrich Schramm war bekannt für seine tls. in Bleistift, tls. in Aquarell ausgeführten Portraits von berühmten Zeitgenossen, darunter Alexander von Humboldt, Jakob Grimm, Friedrich Rückert, Heinrich Laube, Ludwig Tieck und Clemens Wenzel Fürst Metternich.
