This book, written by a renowned classical scholar, offers a comprehensive exploration of the principles and practical aspects of architecture as understood in ancient Rome. The author draws upon the writings of the esteemed Roman architect Vitruvius to provide a detailed examination of the theories and techniques that shaped Roman architectural design. Through an analysis of Vitruvius's Ten Books on Architecture, the book delves into the fundamental concepts of symmetry, proportion, and aesthetics that guided ancient Roman builders. It examines the various building materials employed, including stone, brick, and concrete, and discusses their properties and applications. The book also explores the broader cultural and historical context of Roman architecture, examining its influences and its impact on subsequent architectural traditions. The author highlights the significance of Vitruvius's work as a foundational text for understanding the development of Western architecture and its enduring legacy in shaping the built environment around the world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Giovan Battista Gabia, born in Verona in the early 16th century, was a professor of Greek at the University of Rome from around 1553 until 1582. Alongside teaching, he was also active as a translator and editor of Greek and Hebrew texts. In 1583, he published in Rome a translation of the Gregorian calendar into Greek. He probably died around 1590 (cf. E. Del Gallo, Gabia, Giovan Battista, in: ?Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani?, vol. 51, 1998, s.v.).Scarce first edition, dedicated to the King of France Francis I, of Philandrier commentary on Vitruvius, that was reprinted in Paris in 1545 and later issued accompanying Vitruvius's actual text in Strasbourg in 1550 in 16mo and in De Tournes' enlarged 4to format in Lyons in 1552.The edition opens with a note to the scholars (?studiosis?), a six-page long list of quoted authors, and a short life of Vitruvius based on the autobiographical references that can be found in his own work.As secretary to Cardinal Georges D'Armagnac, Philandrier lived in Rome for a few years, becoming a member of the famous Accademia della Virtù, which, founded by Claudio Tolomei in 1538 under the protection of Cardinal Ippolito de' Medici, had been established for the main purpose of studying and commenting on the work of Vitruvius (see M. Maylender, Storia delle accademie d'Italia, Bologna, 1926-?30, V, pp. 478-480). The academy, whose members included Marcello Cervini (the future Pope Marcellus II), Jacopo Barozzi called Il Vignola, Alessandro Manzuoli, Luca Contile, Annibal Caro, Marco Antonio Flaminio, and Francesco Maria Molza, to name but a few, met twice a week at the residence of Archbishop Francesco Colonna; during the meetings Vitrivius' De Architectura was read and discussed in order to publish a comprehensive annotated edition of the work. The activity and goals of the Accademia della Virtù are outlined by Tolomei in a very interesting letter to Count Agostino Landi, dated 14 November 1542 (cf. D. Wiebenson, ed., Architectural Theory and Practice from Alberti to Ledoux, Chicago, IL, 1982, pp. 1-13).It was precisely during his stay in Rome that Philander (known in Italian as Filandro and in Latin as Philander) produced his Annotationes, which remained the only published outcome of the ambitious project of the Accademia della Virtù (cf. F. Lemerle, Philandrier et le texte de Vitruve, in: ?Mélanges de l'École française de Rome, Italie et Méditerranée?, 106, no. 2, 1994, pp. 517-529).?Philander's commentary is composed of sections of the text followed by practical explanations and definitions, each passage heavily reinforced with scholarly and classical examples [. . .] Philander's work is at once a learned study and a practical manual of architecture, incorporating the methods of both the humanists and architects [. . .] It is the first synthesis of academic and practical interpretations of Vitruvius' treatise to appear in published form. The contribution of Philander and of the Accademia delle Virtù to mid-sixteenth-century architectural theory is of the greatest importance [. . .] Philander's notes would be cited almost without exception by every Vitruvius commentator and translator, from the date of its first appearance until the nineteenth century? (D. Wiebenson, ed., The Mark J. Millard Architectural Collection, I: French books, New York, 1993, no. 165 for the 1552 edition).Guillaume Philandrier, a native of Châtillon-sur-Seine, was a pupil of Jean Perelle. As secretary to G. Book.

"The contribution of Philander and of the Accademia delle Virtu to mid-sixteenth-century architectural theory is of the greatest importance.Philander's notes would be cited almost without exception by every Vitruvius commentator and translator, from the date of its first appearance until the nineteenth cenntury" (Wiebenson, Millard Coll., vol. 1, pp.471ff.). "This famous book by the military engineer to Julius Caesar and to Augustus influenced the architects of the Renaissance including Bramante, Michelangelo, Palladio and Vignola. Subjects covered include architectural materials, chemicals, hydraulics, astronomy, geometry, machinery for civil and military use, optics and music" (Dibner, Heralds, p. 79). "Book 10 gives the first description of a vertical (Vitruvian) water wheel, which became the main source of hydraulic power for milling and other useful purposes during the next 1500 years" (Stanitz, Sources of Science and Technology 5). This composite work, a variorum edition, published in 1649 by Johannes de Laet, a professor at the University of Leyden and director of the Dutch East India Company (1581-1649), combines Vitruvius' De architectura with various texts more or less linked to Vitruvius and to architecture. After the dedication to Queen Christina of Sweden, de Laet printed his own Latin translation of the Henry Wotton's 1624 edition of Elements of Architecture. He continued with the edition of Vitruvius published in the enlarged version of 1552 by Jean de Tournes with the Annotationes by Guillaume Philandrier which makes up the majority of the abundant commentary of footnotes. Following that is Georg Bauer's (Agricola) The Epitome from the treatise on weights (De mensuris et ponderibus Romanorum atque Graecorum), written by the same Philandrier. He also relied and used Barbaro's commentary, the Plinianae exercitationes in Caii Julii Solini Polyhistoria (1629) by Claude Saumaise, and the works of the Hellenist and historian Gerardus Joannes Vossius. The book continues with unpublished notes by the mathematician and music historian Marcus Meibom on Vitruvius and his music theory, with an essay, also unpublished, by the mathematician Nicolaus Goldmann on the Ionic volute and with the Greek and Latin indices on De architectura and the Annotationes taken from Philandrier. After that is the 1612 publication, De verborum Vitruvianorum significatione and the Scamilli impares Vitruviani by Bernardino Baldi. At the end there is a passage from chapter 8 of Scamozzi's book VI (L'idea della architettura universale, 1615). And also, added to all these texts presented as the "must read list" of Vitruvian and architectural literature, are Alberti's De pictura, extracts of the De sculptura by Pomponius Gauricus, the commentary by Louis de Montjosieu on the sculpture and painting of the Ancients (Commentarius de sculptura, caelatura, scalptura, et pictura antiquorum, 1602), and finally a brief commentary by Claude Saumaise on two passages by Solin and a general index. Though de Laet, takes up the text of the 1552 edition of De architectura, and split up the books and chapters followed by Philandrier's Annotationes in their enlarged version, de Laet, nevertheless, didn't hesitate to delete a good number of Philandrier's illustrations in his commentary. On the other hand he reproduced with all its woodcuts the Digression on the orders (Digressio utilissima.), consecrating it in that way as a Vitruvian reference par excellence. De Laet's landmark work on Vitruvius, was daunting and slightly haphazard, as noted by Brunet, but the amount of scholarship he produced in one edition, is a measure of the effects of Vitruvius on the Enlightment and Renaissance. First de Tournes edition of Vitruvius's De architectura using the commentary of Guillaume Philandrier (1505-63), and the first Philandrier edition to be printed in France, first published Rome 1544, with Philandrier's epitome of the German mineralogist Georgius Agricola's work on ancient Roman weights and measures, beautifully printed. In contemporary morocco with contemporary provenance, from the library of Oswald von Eck, a German humanist. Vitruvius's treatise on architecture was extremely popular with Renaissance architects, prompting many to emulate ancient Roman buildings, as well as humanists and antiquarians for the wealth of detailed information it provided on ancient Roman life. The commentary of the French architect Guillaume Philandrier on Vitruvius was one of the most influential, and is accompanied in this edition by his epitome of Georgius Agricola's De mensuris et ponderibus, first published 1533, which was intended to be used alongside that work, allowing readers to navigate it according to categories of measurement including liquid and dry, medical and veterinary, Greek and Roman, etc. It was also useful without recourse to Agricola's work, however, since it clearly lays out the divisions of larger measurements into smaller. There follow two indexes to Vitruvius of Roman and Greek words. Oswald von Eck, who most likely commissioned the binding, was the son of the German humanist Leonard von Eck (1480-1550), tutor of Duke William IV and chancellor of Bavaria. Oswald studied at the universities of Ingoldstadt, of which he became rector in 1539, and Bologna. He was involved in the Ortenburg Nobles' Conspiracy to introduce Protestantism to Bavaria, after which he fell into serious debt and at his death in 1573 his goods, including his library, were auctioned off. [8]ff. 369pp. [20]ff. Contemporary Venetian brown morocco with gilt arabesque corner stamps, same four corner stamp tools used together to form a centrepiece, gilt, edges gilt and gauffered (upper joint a little split at head, new pastedowns and rear flyleaf). First edition of Philandrier's commentary on Vitruvius. An important early text in the critical reception of Vitruvius, and a major influence on Daniele Barbaro's commentary. Philandrier?s work includes substantial quotations from Vitruvius, including some emendations of the standard text. The humanist Philandrier (1505-1565) had been a pupil of Sebastiano Serlio in Paris. He had this work printed while he was on a diplomatic mission in Venice (1535-39) and later Rome (1540-45) as secretary to Bishop Georges d'Armagnac (later Cardinal). There is a famous portrait of him and the bishop painted by Titian (one of the earliest Titians to come to England, acquired by the Duke of Buckingham in 1624, and now in the Duke of Northumberland?s collection at Alnwick castle). In Italy, Philandrier was able to discuss his findings on Vitruvius with contemporary scholars such as Pirro Ligorio and Claudio Tolomei, and architects and artists such as Antonio and Giovan Battista da Sangallo, and the young Vignola. Philandrier?s work consists of Latin commentary on the antique text in the form of notes distributed in books and chapters. Philandrier?s annotations, in italics, are preceded by extracts from Vitruvius printed in capital letters. Philandrier also corrects the text of the edition of the De architectura that he is using (as it happens, the Florentine edition of 1522), which seems corrupt to him. This is the first work in which Vitruvius's name appears in the form that henceforth was the accepted way to refer to him, Marcus Vitruvius Pollio. The binding is interesting as it shows a corner tool which is very similar to one used by the so-called Mendoza Binder (Andrea di Lorenzo); see Hobson, Renaissance Book Collecting, fig. 83. Provenance: Mss ownership inscription by the Swedish ?castle bailiff? of Upsala, Jonas Hellvik (1711-1792) on title-page. Paper flaw at foot of L7, V8 torn at foot. Cicognara 708.
