Der talentvolle, sehr fromm erzogene Knabe (sein Vater war Präceptor im genannten Orte) wurde schon im eilften Jahre in die Klosterschule in Denkendorf, im fünfzehnten in das theologische Stift in Tübingen aufgenommen. Der erstere Aufenthalt brachte ihn schon unter Bengel`s unmittelbare Leitung; im J. 1738 wurde er diesem als Vicar und Amanuensis beigegeben und führte, nachdem er 1742 Pfarrer in Bolheim bei Heidenheim geworden, eine Tochter desselben heim. Nachdem er mehrere Jahre seine zweite Pfarrei, Hedelfingen bei Cannstatt, und das Decanat Markgröningen versehen hatte, übertrug man ihm 1766 das Decanat Kirchheim unter Teck, wo er bis an sein Ende verblieb. Er war ein Seelsorger im eminentesten Sinne des Worts, nicht nur in seinen Gemeinden wirkte er mit größter Treue und vieler Weisheit wie durch seine Predigten, so durch die sorgfältigste Privatseelsorge, sondern auch die Geistlichen seiner Diöcese wußte er in herzlicher Liebe und zu aller Segen fleißig um sich zu sammeln, und daneben auch schriftstellerisch seinen Amtsbrüdern wie wahrheitsuchenden Laien gute Dienste zu leisten. In erster Beziehung ist sein Evangelischer Fingerzeig" in 7 Bänden (176066) zu nennen, eine Bearbeitung sämmtlicher evangelischer Perikopen in Form sehr genauer Dispositionen zu Predigten, eine Arbeit, die heute noch als Fundgrube vortrefflicher, oft sehr origineller, aber immer höchst fruchtbarer Predigtgedanken von großem Werth ist. Außerdem ist sein Gnomon über Bücher des Alten Testaments (nach dem Vorbilde des Bengel`schen Gnomon zum N. T.) zu erwähnen ("Gnomon in XII prophetas minores", mit einer Vorrede von Bengel, 1753. Gnomon Psalmorum", 1760); bedeutender aber sind seine erst nach seinem Tode erschienenen Sammlungen zur Pastoraltheologie", 1771, in zwei Bänden, neuerlich in kürzerer Zusammenfassung herausgegeben von Victor Friedrich Oehler, Stuttg. 1867, die, wie es seine schriftstellerische Art war, in zwangloser Weise viele homiletische, katechetische und seelsorgerliche Erfahrungsrathschläge darbieten.
