Der kunstsinnige König berief 1623 den jungen Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) als Hofmaler nach Madrid in seinen Dienst. - Verienzelt Stockflecken im weißen Rand.

König seit 1621, Sohn von Philipp III.; überließ die Regierung weitgehend dem Grafen von Olivares, mit dem er die Wiederherstellung der spanischen Großmacht anstrebte. Die Ergebnisse dieser Politik waren für Spanien katastrophal: Die Verwicklung in den Dreißigjährigen Krieg schwächte die Wirtschaft bis zum Staatsbankrott (1627). Im Frieden von Münster 15.5. 1648 mußte Spanien die Unabhängigkeit der nördlichen niederländischen Provinzen anerkennen; Im Pyrenäenfrieden (7.11.1659) verlor es Gebiete an Frankreich; Unruhen im Inneren ( besonders in Portugal, Andalusien, Katalonien, 1640) führten zum Verlust Portugals und dessen Kolonien.
