Add to basketCondition: Good. A printed "Phrenological and Temperamental" chart, filled out in manuscript by Prof. Henry Foster Smith for Mr. Thomas C. Ryall in January of 1860. Smith seems to be a relatively unknown figure, with one publication, "An essay on human magnetism, or the infant magnetism enrobed in its true panoply" (1844) attrib…uted to him. The chart provides some background information on phrenology and temperaments, and then scores the subject on them-Ryall was mostly of "nervous" temperament. At the bottom is a longer description of Ryall based on his test results: "This gentleman has large mental force + a little under medium vital force - well-balanced temperament, blending activity, strength + force - social + domestic organs full - great firmness + ability with high self-esteem which is modified by large approbativeness - strong reflective organs + concentrativeness - moderate energy of character - very cautious + at times hesitating - but when aroused has much force - hope should be encouraged - Religious organs large with a high sense of justice - mechanical talent good - mathematics excellent - philosophical cast of mind - excellent for civil engineering - agricultural life quite good." We find no copies of Smith's chart, filled out or otherwise, on OCLC or offered for sale, at the time of writing. . Single-sided sheet measuring 12 ¾ x 16 ½ inches. Folded with some small tears at folds and one other small hole; other wrinkling and folds especially to corners; some toning and discoloration.

I shall pass by to see our little patient on my way to Woodcroft. | I am, with best respects, | Dear Madame | Yours truly | Spurzheim.' 'Woodcroft' may be Woodcroft House in Northamptonshire, for which see Gentleman's Magazine, April 1813, or the village in Greenford. In either case the connection with Spurzheim is unclear, although he did visit Britain on several occasions. From the distinguished autograph collection of Richard Hunter, son of Ida Macalpine, whose collection of 7000 books relating to psychiatry is in Cambridge University Library. Macalpine and Hunter had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'. A scarce autograph.

Later brown endpapers and pastedowns. With the original endleaves bound in. Cooter 238.47. Oxford DNB, L. S. Jacyna, "Combe [Comb], George (17881858)". A major figure in phrenology, Combe founded the Edinburgh Phrenological Society in 1820. Jacyna calls this book his most important and influential work, and records that it sold hundreds of thousands of copies throughout the nineteenth century. The Oxford DNB article notes that Combe's messages of individualism and his goal of improving the human condition resonated deeply with the reading public. Although Combe advocates certain problematic doctrines of phrenology, like a person's aptitude being determined by their brain shape and size, he also writes that those in lower-class upbringings can improve their fortunes with education and better societal treatment. He also advocates strongly for the end of capital and corporal punishment, and believes prison reform ought to be tailored towards a person's mind, not the punishment of their physical body. Finally, this publication drew criticism from the English clergy as the role of the divine is not at all discussed in the natural laws or in the human physiology that Combe outlines in his book. Combe instead offers a secular vision of how the world works and how it could be made better for human beings. A small chip to the spine label, a later bookplate on the front pastedown, an ink note on the free front endpaper.

'[.] | X appears decidedly opposed to an alarmed at the science, and feels himself awfully degraded with the compari…sons drawn by Phrenologists between the human species and the lower animals - that they should exist, breathe, and partake of, in a limited degree, corresponding qualities with the human race. [.] Neither do I believe that the cleverest Phrenologist will ever be able to tell the propensities or certain peculiarites of character to a single shade, as obstacles exist in Phrenologies as in other ologies'. Discusses of the 'structure of the human brain'. Concludes 'Was it not the will of the Deity that we should educate and improve our civilization and morality, he would not have endowed us with those qualities of reflection and research.' The celebrated coroner Thomas Wakley (1795-1862) had connections with Wiveliscombe, but given the nature of the piece it is unlikely to be his.

A scarce anonymous pamphlet wading into the battle Sir William Stirling Hamilton (1788-1856) fought against the practitioners of phrenology. The author takes up Hamilton?s side… against the pseudo-science but dismisses his methods. Hamilton had read two papers on the subject to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1825 and 1826 from which the conclusion was that phrenological methods lead to moral barbarism and atheism; this pamphlet insists on challenging the factual basis of the system rather than its moral import. It may well have been influential on Hamilton, who five years later published another paper focussing exclusively on actual observations of the brain and their disproving of phrenological methods. This copy belonged to John Forbes, probably the second son of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo.

He had become a vegetarian in 1832 under the influence of Rousseau's treatise Émile Struve wrote the first German vegetarian-themed novel, Mandaras Wanderungen i…n 1833. He founded the Vegetarische Gesellschaft Stuttgart (Stuttgart Vegetarian Society) in 1868.He wrote the vegetarian book Pflanzenkost, in 1869. Historian Corinna Treitel has noted that Struve linked "vegetarianism to republican self governance." He was alos a phrenologist , He published 3 books on the subject.

We expect Mrs. H. Sidd…ons." Mrs. Henry Siddons, with her brother William Henry Murray, were the Scottish Directors of the Theatre Royal of Edinburgh. Fanny Kemble mentions the three in her Memoir (L., 1879): "Mrs. Harry Siddons's intimate friends and associates were the remarkable brothers, George and Andrew Combe; the former a lawyer by profession, but known to the literary and scientific world of Europe and America as the Apostle of Phrenology, and the author of a work entitled 'The Constitution of Man.'"
