Third edition of this landmark architectural text by the founder of the Bauhaus, based on lectures delivered in London in 1934 following the school's closure in Germany. This edition published in 1956 by Faber & Faber Ltd, following its original publication in 1935. In this influential manifesto, Gropius outlines the principles of modern architecture, advocating the unity of art, craft, and technology, and presenting the educational philosophy of the Bauhaus. The book played a major role in introducing Bauhaus ideas to Britain and the English-speaking world and significantly shaped twentieth-century architectural discourse and praxis. 8vo (6" x 8"), publisher's cloth binding, first edition later state photomontage dust jacket by László Moholy-Nagy, 112 pages, b/w photographic illustrations. Translated from the German by P. Morton Shand and with a preface by Frank Pick. A desirable mid-century printing of a foundational modernist text, uncommon with the iconic Moholy-Nagy dust jacket. Slight bowing and minor rubbing to boards. Glue burn and foxing to endpapers, not affecting remaining leaves. Mild rubbing and light chipping to dj, with creasing to bottom edge of front cover. A very nice copy notwithstanding.
Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. Book shows light wear top and bottom spine with very light wear along bottom edge and corners. Otherwise very clean with bright white print at cover and spine on black cloth HB covers. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket has 1" open tear top front cover, chipping, edge wear, now wrapped in protective clear cover. 112 pages on glossy paper with 16 full page b&w plates, sometimes split between several photos, moslty exteriors. Gropius's manifesto on new architecture and Bauhaus work presenting theories developed as director of Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau 1919-1928, addressing problems of art and industry with practical solutions, calling for architects educated to new materials and techniques, translated from German by P. Morton Shand. Keywords: Portrait Frontispiece, Functional Design, Industrial Production, Standardization, Rational Methods, Team Collaboration, Social Needs, Building Practice, Director 1919-1928.
