L'area geografica compresa fra le città di Lecco e di Como, raccolta intorno alle sponde del Lario, vanta da più di un secolo una continua e ben nota tradizione alpinistica. In particolare, quest'ultima si è espressa, negli anni, soprattutto nell'arrampicata libera su roccia, trovando nelle Grigne e anche nel Resegone un terreno privilegiato e paesaggisticamente magnifico. In questo senso, sin dagli anni 30 del '900, dall'epopea del sesto grado, e con la scuola di Riccardo Cassin e compagni, le rocce lecchesi si sono distinte come una delle culle dell'arrampicata su calcare in Italia. Dal 1984 la zona lecchese e comasca ha visto una rapida e continua diffusione dell'arrampicata sportiva, entro un'evoluzione che non ha conosciuto soluzioni di continuità ed è oggi quanto mai vivace.
