Add to basketRare first edition of a remarkable Latin medical manual by the French surgeon Pierre Pigray (ca. 1532-1613), also known as Petrus Pigraeus. Drawing on decades of practical experience and the teachings of his mentor, the well-known Ambroise Paré (1510-1590), Pigray offers a comprehensive guide to surgery, diseases, wounds, fractures, and other medical conditions. The Epitome includes striking case studies: a man who believed a witch had caused his impotence, a group of accused witches, and a girl purportedly possessed by the devil. These cases reveal Pigray's sceptical yet operating within a medical and legal framework that accepted the reality of a magical worldview. Through these examples, Pigray explores the interaction between natural and preternatural realms while demonstrating concern for professional ethics, patient care, and the honour and psychological wellbeing of his patients. The work was originally published in French in 1609, and soon followed by numerous subsequent editions throughout the 17th century. With the bookplate of physician J. J. Ballard mounted on the verso of the first flyleaf, numbered "265", the number 265 is also present as an inscription on the title page, together with the initials "BM", and a manuscript annotation on the last flyleaf by Simon Barbuot, dated 1627. The vellum is slightly soiled, with some loss of material in the back, showing the cardboard underneath. A loss in the outer margin of pp. 49 and 65, not affecting the text. Otherwise in good condition.l Krivatsy 8997; Wellcome I, 5038; cf. Petry, "'Many Things Surpass our Knowledge': An Early Modern Surgeon on Magic, Witchcraft and Demonic Possession", in: Social history of medicine 25.1 (2012): 47-64. Contemporary overlapping vellum, sewn on four supports laced through the joints, the manuscript title and author on the spine, red sprinkled edges. With an engraved title, an engraved portrait of the author, several woodcut head- and tailpieces, and decorated woodcut initials throughout. Pages: 11, [1], 771, [33] pp.

Add to basketVery rare corrected and enlarged edition of the translation into Dutch of this medical manual by Pierre Pigray (Petrus Pigraeus, ca. 1532-1613). Only one other copy has been recorded in institutions, which lacks the title page, which is why the present edition has erroneously been included in the Dutch Short Title Catalogue (STCN) with the title Kort begryp, van de leere der medic?ne ende chirurgie. The work is divided in ten parts, discussing (general) surgery, tumours, wounds, ulcers, fractures of bones, dissections, various diseases, the expelling of ghosts and all other unnatural matters, and medicines. The title mentions that this is the third Dutch edition, but it is actually the fifth. Earlier Dutch editions were published in 1623 (Dordrecht, Damis van Rybeeck), 1633 (Amsterdam, J.E. Cloppenburgh), 1648 (Amsterdam, for T. J. Lootsman.), and 1655 (Amsterdam, widow of T. J. Lootsman). A later edition followed in 1672 (Amsterdam, widow of T. J. Lootsman).Pigray studied surgery under the famous Ambroise Paré (1510-90), the father of French surgery, and served in the army. With the help of Paré, he became the physician to the French kings Charles IX, Henri III, Henri IV, and Louis XIII. The present work was written as a summary of the writings of Paré. It was originally published in Latin in Paris in 1612 as Epitome praeceptorum medicinae chirurgicae cum ampla singulis morbis conventium remediorum expositione. The French edition, with the title Epitome des préceptes de medicine et de chirurgie avec ample déclaration des remèdes propres aux malades, was first published in Lyon (and Rouen) in 1628. The Dutch translation was made by Pieter Rutgersz. van Nieustadt, who was the official surgeon of the city of Dordrecht. A crossed out ownership annotation from 1662 on the first free flyleaf, a later crossed out annotation below ("Lambertus Brassius (?)"), and a later annotation on the title page ("ex bibliotheca S. collet. Med. Doct."), with two crossed out drawings below. The vellum is soiled, the front joint has split, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The leaves are somewhat browned, especially the last quarter of the work. Otherwise in good condition.l STCN 31566245X (1 copy); USTC 1845291 (1 copy); not in Krivatsy; Wellcome. Contemporary overlapping vellum, sewn on 4 supports laced through the joints, the manuscript title and author on the spine. With a woodcut vignette on the title page, several decorated woodcut initials and woodcut tailpieces. Pages: [12], 450, [10] pp.
