Rare first editions of Pinder and Geiler von Kaysersberg's remarkable illustrated works, along with Coccius Sabellicus' Hebrew history, all housed in the contemporary binding, and in exceptional condition. - I: First edition of the "Speculum passionis" (Mirror of the Passion), created by the employees of Dürer. Compiled from the New Testament and the Early Fathers, the work is in the tradition of the passion tracts of the late Middle Ages and follows Bonaventura's order of contemplatio, imitatio, admiratio, exultatio, resolutio, quies. - Pinder had many of his books illustrated by the workshop of Albrecht Dürer. He had probably ordered the woodcuts for the "Speculum" by the end of 1505. As the Master, from the summer of 1505 until the spring of 1507, was on his second visit to Italy, the cuts for the "Speculum Passionis" were created by three of Dürer's employees. The result was one of the finest illustrated books of the 16th century. - With the seventy-seven woodcuts (thirty-nine of which are full-page) Pinder and the artists created a new type of devotional book in which the illustration is of equal status with the text. This monumental series can only be compared to Dürer's Apocalypse of 1498, and the success of Pinder's picture book probably prompted Dürer to publish his three large woodcut series (The Large Passion, The Life of the Virgin, and The Apocalypse) in book form in 1511. Thirty of the large cuts are by Hans Schäufelein and form the artist's first large series. The final cuts, The Pentecost and The Last Judgement, demonstrate a shift towards a clear disposition of space and figures a reflection of Dürer's ideas and later furnished the inspiration for some of the scenes in Dürer's Small Passion of 1509-11. Two of the large cuts (leaves 51v and 54r) are by Hans Baldung Grien, and the one on leaf 21v is by Hans Süß von Kulmbach. The majority of the smaller cuts, and a very few of the larger ones, had been used before in Pinder's "Beschlossen Gart des Rosenkrantz Mariae" (1505). - Pinder set up his private press in 1505 and produced eleven books, in large part of devotional character, written or compiled by himself. The press was run by Friedrich Peypus, and when Peypus in 1512 married Pinder's daughter Martha, Pinder gave the shop to his son-in-law. He was town physician of Nördlingen from 1484 until 1489, subsequently personal physician to the Elector Frederick of Saxony (1489-1493), and Nuremberg's town physician until his death (1519). - II: First edition, published shortly before the first German edition (1506). Johann Geiler (1445-1510) was a native of Schaffhausen, brought up in Kaysersberg (Alsace), and educated at the newly founded universities of Freiburg and Basel. He became a doctor of theology in 1475 and from 1478 lived in Strasburg as a preacher at the Cathedral. Later called the "German Savonarola", he was one of the most effective and forceful advocates of Church reform at the end of the 15th century. - Geiler himself published only a few texts, while most of his sermons were written down by his audience or were transcribed posthumously fr.

Calf of the 16th century over wooden boards, richly gilt and blind-stamped, (spine restored, without the clasps, a bit worn). First edition, very rare. Adams P 1243; Panzer VII,446,48; Murray, German Books 333; Muther 897; Proctor 11031; Dodgson I(,505 and II,5,1; Holstein II,128; Oldenbourg, Baldung L 7 and Schäufelein L 4; Curjel, Baldung 161/II. Most important graphical work of Schäufelein, who produced 39 of the woodcuts, thereof 33 full-page sized (4 repetitions). The rest of the woodcuts are by Hans Baldung Grien and Wolf Taut. Leaf XVI is a copy of the full-page sized woodcut on original paper. Some pages washed. Some prints show slight foxing, parts are slightly waterstained, name and ownership entry on title. Fine copy with strong woodcut imprints in a decorative binding presumably from the Nuremberg area.

The title flanked by 3 woodcut stars and small man-in-moon, on title verso a full-page circular woodcut of a physician de…monstrating uroscopic analysis to a student, surrounded by a border of urine glasses with xylographic abbreviated captions of different diagnoses, table on facing page with the same urine glasses with full (unabbreviated) typographic captions; three small cuts at beginning of each part of a physician attending a patient in bed and performing the diagnostic procedure described in that section, several different small woodcuts of urine glasses repeated throughout part 1. Bound in sprinkled calf of c. 1800, spine gilt-tooled and with red morocco label lettered in gilt, boards ruled in gilt, red-sprinkled edges (joints partly split and wormed but cords holding firmly, minor wear to extremities). Annotations in contemporary hand throughout. Text generally quite crisp and clean; several small wormholes at beginning and end affecting text; the final third with light faint dampstaining at foot. Provenance: J.J. Chaponnière (inscribed on first flyleaf). In all a very good copy. ---- RARE FIRST EDITION, PRIVATELY PRINTED AT THE AUTHOR'S PRESS. Pinder was initially active as physicus in Nördlingen, from 1489 to 1493 personal physician to the Saxon elector Frederick the Wise and finally appointed physician to the city of Nuremberg. He was one of the first physicians to disseminate his works with the aid of printing. This diagnostic treatise divided into three sections treating uroscopy, analysis of the pulse, and the various types of fever, was printed on a press that Pinder had installed in his house in 1505, probably by his future son-in-law Friedrich Peypus, who printed at least 11 editions there between 1505 and 1513, mostly of Pinder's works. The types are those of the Printer of the Sodalitas Celtica, with whom Peypus may have learned printing. In 1515 Peypus moved the press -- apparently part of his wife's dowry -- to a new address; he remained active until 1534 (cf. Benzing pp. 332-333, nos. 12 and 15). The volume also includes Gilles de Corbeil's Carmina de urinarum judiciis, but omits the epilogue found in Choulant's edition of that text. "Pinder's edition is not listed in Choulant's bibliography of printed editions of Gilles, and contains a number of variant readings not recorded by him" (Durling). Although the woodcut illustration and table of urines were intended to be colored, being not otherwise intelligible, colored copies are rare.
