"This important work, long out of print, has two important and invaluable assets,: It delves beyond the books on heraldry, giving 'original evidences derived from representations of arms which exist in rolls of arms, in windows or in carvings. Secondly, its information is not limited to England or Scotland, but is liberal in heraldic instances taken throughout Europe. There is no other publication at present in English which gives such detail on Continental heraldry.' Strikingly colourful and authentic illustrations are the life blood of this vibrant work which contains no less than 56 full-page plates, the great majority in colour, and 106 illustrations in text." - dust jacket. pp. xxxviii, 858. Extensive index. Book in superior condition - clean, bright and unmarked with nary a trace of wear. Price-clipped dust jacket, now preserved in glossy new archival-grade Brodart, is generally in worthy condition but for loss and openings at head of spine. Overall, a quality copy of this superlative reference.; 8vo.

John Pine (1690-1756) Print Seller, Publisher, Engraver who was considered Britain's foremost heraldic and decorative engraver of his generation. Pine was the first Black man in England to join the Masons. He was a close friend of William Hogarth who painted his portrait several times. Numerous handsome vignettes, initials, head- and tail-pieces accompany the text. Pine is considered by some historians to have been the first black man made a mason in England. He was a member of the masonic lodge at Globe Tavern in 1725 (where his name was spelled 'Pyne') and we know that "Bro. John Pine engraved the annual List of Lodges from 1725 to 1741. ~~Printing and the Mind of Man (1963): "This edition of Horace was printed wholly from copper plates engraved by John Pine. The text was first set in type, and an impression from it on paper was transferred to the copper, which was then engraved, the decorations being added at the same time. The result was a page of great brilliance and precision, but the method was prohibitively expensive." (PMM2, 620). Very Good binding.

Contemporary mottled calf (slightly rubbed, rebacked with sheep). Provenance: With the engraved armorial book plate of original subscriber the Rt. Hon. George Neville, first Lord Abergavenny (1727-1785) on the front paste-down. First edition, and ORIGINAL SUBSCRIBERS COPY, of Pine's celebrated work depicting the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, were ". perhaps inspired by the success of Picart's publication in 1714 of Charles Le Brun's Meleager tapestries. The Lords set of ten huge hangings, designed by Hendrick Vroom (1563-1640) and depicting the defeat of the Spanish armada, hung in the house from 1650 until 1834, when they were destroyed by fire. Pine's prints were engraved after drawings by C. Lempriere and embellished with elegant borders incorporating emblematic figures by Hubert Gravelot, the French artist who had travelled to England in 1732 to assist on an English edition of Picart's "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (1733-7). Pine evidently regarded the armada prints as one of the major projects of his career, since he used his influence to ensure that the Copyright Act of 1735 gave him the exclusive right to copy the tapestries, the insertion of a clause to this effect at the third reading of the bill in April 1735 indicating that the scheme took at least four years from inception to publication" (DNB).
