Paperback. Condition: Good. First Edition. Paperback, 15" tall by 22" wide, engraved title page and 65 engraved illustrations. Very good restored condition: our binder restored some loss to the corners of the original wraps and title page, restored the spine, and rebound the pages. Plain olive wraps with one small old label to front cover, page corners have some wrinkling & soiling from use. All images are clean & bright. Bartolomeo Pinelli Romano was a prolific engraver & artist of the 18th and 19th centuries. This book is his engravings inspired by Cervantes' Don Quixote. In a modern sense, it can be seen as a forerunner to graphic novels. The illustrations capture the adventure and the humor of the story, and this Romano's work should be considered one of the great Quixote illustrated adaptations. Extra postage required for international or expedited shipping.

Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A wonderful collection of Pinelli's engravings of ancient costumes, with notes on each plate by Nicolo de Scarani. First edition. With a beautifully engraved frontispiece. Containing one hundred plates by Bartolomeo Pinelli. Bartolomeo Pinelli (November 20, 1771 April 1, 1835) was an Italian illustrator and engraver. Pinelli was born and died in Rome, the son of a religious statues modeller. Pinelli was educated first in Bologna and then at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. He lived in a poor quarter of Rome. His son, Achille Pinelli, was a famous watercolourist in his own right. An extremely prolific artist, his illustrations depicted the costumes of the Italian people, the great epic poems and numerous other subjects, including popular customs. In general, the most recurring subject is Rome, the ancient city as well as the modern one: its inhabitants and its monuments. The plates in this volume are preceded by extensive notes by Signor Marchese Nicolo de Scarani, an honorary member of the Pontificia Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna. In a decorative paper covered binding with leather spine label. Externally, rather worn with slight loss to head of front board. Marks to front board also. Internally, firmly bound, bright with occasional spots and slight marks, though most plates remain generally clean. Small repair to one plate. Very Good. book.

Add to basketOblong folio, 10 lithographic plates (nos. 1-10, of 20), all dated (1830) and signed in the plate, with quotations from Manzoni's work beneath; a few marginal spots, otherwise a very good set, bound in the original blue drab wrappers.First edition of one of the earliest attempts to illustrate Manzoni's masterpiece, by one of the most celebrated engravers of the time. Manzoni, however, apparently objected to Pinelli's illustrations on the grounds that the figures and costumes were too 'Roman' and publication was halted after only 20 lithographs had been produced: 'Si ignorano i motivi per cui la serie si interruppe e perchè l'incisore procedette con tanta ineguale suddivisione illustrativa: quindici tavole per i primi sette capitoli, cinque soltanto per i successivi tredici, che, drammaticamente, offrivano anche più pretesti d'immagine che non i primi' (Cesana-Mascherpa, 1973, p. 30).
