This comprehensive compendium on Berlin bridges was released by municipal authorities in 1902, presenting an in-depth treatise of the history and, in particular, the development of construction of city bridges from 18761897. Volume one is illustrated with 203 in-text reproductions of architectural drawings, plans from various collections and photographs by Hermann Rückwardt and Georg Bartels, with additional 52 full page depictions of bridges, four of them copper plate etchings after drawings of the painter Stridbeck the Younger, courtesy of the Springer Verlag, and 48 heliogravures from photographs by Hermann Rückwardt, all produced by Meisenbach Riffarth & Co., with tissue guards. The work includes chapters on the canalization of the lower Spree as well as comparative information on construction costs based on bidding results for the projects by private companies, with an index of all names of Berlin bridges at rear. Volume two contains lithographs of measured technical drawings on 41 plates printed to one side ony, versos blank, including a double foldout of the city and bridges by Joh. Bernhard Schultz from 1688. Profiles of three waterways are printed in two colors and a map of Berlin at rear in three colors, indicating bridges in red. Text in German. Light wear along edges of binding. Name written to free front endpaper in color pencil of volume 2. Some creasing of tissue guards. Light age toning of block. Bindings in overall very good, interior in very good with copper etchings and heliogravures in fine condition.
