paperback. Condition: Very Good in Wrappers. No Jacket. First Edition. New York. 1959. Grove Press. 1st American Paperback Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. Translated from the Russian by Ivy Litvinov. 472 pages. paperback. E-175. Cover design by Roy Kuhlman. keywords: Europe Russia Literature Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - For the Western reader unfamiliar with the writings of Alexei Pisemsky, this novel will come as a revelation attesting anew to the power and vitality of Russian fiction at the height of its splendor. ONE THOUSAND SOULS introduces the major work of a Russian master of nineteenth-century fiction who, though he has been ranked with Goncharov and Turgenev, has never before been published in the United States. Its passion for life, and its analysis of human nature and the forces that drive men beyond normal limits, bring ONE THOUSAND SOULS into the great tradition of the nineteenth century Russian novel. It is the story of Kalinovich, a young man of talent and promise, who reaches prominence in the official world through marrying an heiress with powerful family connections. As he forges relentlessly ahead he betrays those who love him and, in the end, destroys himself. In ONE THOUSAND SOULS, Pisemsky draws a gallery of character studies which finds few equals in world literature. Kalinovich's first fiancee and eventual mistress, Nastya, is one of the most enchanting women in Russian fiction; the ruthless figure of Prince Ivan has the vitality of Stendhal's Count Mosca; and Godnev is as powerful in his simple-hearted goodness as any similar character in Dickens. '. [Pisemsky] is the true successor of Gogol. But he is infinitely more objective than either Gogol or any of the other realists. Pisemsky's great narrative gift and exceptionally strong grip on reality make him one of the best Russian novelists.' - D. S. Mirsky, A HISTORY OF RUSSIAN LITERATURE. inventory #8570.

Here are three short stories by a 19th century Russian novelist whose heyday was in the 1850s, after he moved from the provinces and his work as a local government assessor to concentrate on his writing, in St Petersburg. This, however, proved not to be the most sensible move, and he had to return to work for the government after his reputation began to falter. His writings demonstrate a deep pessimism and scepticism about all the fashionable ideas of the time, believing that there was no hope for improvement in the situation of Russian peasantry in general, whatever new laws or practices were brought in. His stories provide a very different picture from that offered by such writers as Turgenev or Tolstoy. Aleksey Feofilaktovich Pisemsky (1821â?"1881) was a Russian novelist and dramatist, regarded as an equal of Ivan Turgenev and Fyodor Dostoyevsky in the late 1850s, but whose reputation suffered a spectacular decline after he fell out with Sovremennik magazine in the early 1860s. A realistic playwright, along with Aleksandr Ostrovsky he was responsible for the first dramatisation of ordinary people in the history of Russian theatre. Pisemsky's great narrative gift and exceptionally strong grip on reality make him one of the best Russian novelists according to D.S. Mirsky. Our book is in good condition, protected by an unclipped jacket which is only lightly worn, though somewhat sunned to spine and top portion of the front. The book itself, bound in charcoal cloth with gilt author's name and publisher on the spine, is in almost 'very good' condition externally. Inside, the front fep is embellished with critical comments about the three stories, and a ?name dated 'April 1989' in biro at the top. There are no other annotations, the binding is firm, and all pages clean and bright.

He uses the town of NN as a microcosm to explore broader themes through the lives of the Godniev family and other members of their social circle, who include businessmen, intellectuals, and government officials. The Godnievs are a landed family living a modest and insular existence. Their lives are suddenly disrupted by the arrival of a new district superintendent, Kalinovich. The author deftly captures the social dynamics of the provincial town and the interplay of the personal and political lives of these provincial inhabitants. In its exploration of human nature and social commentary, the book is both a fascinating historical document and a meditation on the universal experience of the human condition. It provides a rich and nuanced understanding of the nuances of Russian culture and social structure during a significant period of transition.
