Die Kretinennase.- By Walther Plattner.- "The size and shape of the noses of fifty male and sixty two female goitreless cretins were examined. The height was very small, about that of boys of II to I2 years and girls of 9 to 10. The width was superior to that of all groups of normal European individuals. According to the height-width-index the cretins are mesorrhine. In 3I.8 per cent. Of the male and in 47.2 per cent. of the female cretins the nose was at the same time small, short, broad and low. Other characteristics show that the cretin's nose is obviously a primitive one and a very conspicuous phenomenon within Europe. The methods of " nasal triangles " and " nasal pyramids " were used by which the size and shape of the nose could be clearly visualized. Both these methods might be utilized with advantage in constitutional and racial research work." F. Tietze. The Eugenics Review, XXXII/2 (July, 1940), p.66 "In a study published in 1940, for example, the chief physician at the Rheinau psychiatric care facility Walther Plattner concluded that 'the cretins feature a nose-face relation very similar to that found with primitive tribes of people [Völkerstämne], whereas they exhibited 'strong differences [compared with the] normally grown European'.88 Such comparisons show how colonial images of the 'Other' found their way into eugenic representations of the internal 'Other'. Eugenicists resorted to a cultural archive of colonial metaphors and conceptions of difference in order to demarcate and designate differences within the Swiss population."
