Le temps que les institutions de l'étranger peuvent consacrer à l'étude du français ne permet guère d'y faire un cours de littérature complet et régulier; il est nécessaire que les leçons destinées à cet enseignement profitent en même temps à l'étude de la langue elle-même. Mon livre doit donc répondre à un double but: faire connaître aux élèves les principaux auteurs et fournir un nombre suffisant de lectures intéressantes et variées. -- J'ai pris pour point de départ le temps de Corneille et de Pascal, c'est-à-dire l'époque où la langue commence à prendre une : définitive; mais j'ai fait précéder le choix des morceaux tirés -- écrivains des 17e, 18e et 19e siècles d'une Introduction donnant un abrégé de l'histoire de la langue et de la littérature françaises jusqu'à Corneille. Cette introduction n'a été ajoutée qu'à partir de la troisième édition de mon Manuel. J'ai tâché de diriger l'attention des élèves sur les transformations que la langue a subies, en ajoutant de nombreuses notes philologiques au texte des auteurs du siècle de Louis XIV. Quant à l'orthographe, j'ai adopté, même pour le 17e siècle, celle de la dernière édition du Dictionnaire de -- l'Académie. -- Si l'on est d'accord avec moi sur la nature de l'enseignement dont il s'agit, on préférera à de longs développements de courtes biographies rangées chronologiquement et placées en tête des morceaux choisis dans les ouvrages des auteurs. -- Contrairement à la plupart de mes devanciers, je n'ai pas séparé les poètes des prosateurs, et j'ai tâché de comprendre dans un seul volume tous les écrivains des trois derniers siècles que les élèves doivent connaître. J'ai fait une part très large aux poètes et aux prosateurs du dix-septième siècle et du dix-huitième, à ces écrivains qu'en France les aspirants au baccalauréat ès lettres doivent étudier exclusivement. Mais, dans un livre destiné aux institutions de l'étranger, je devais accorder une place suffisante aux auteurs qui représentent la langue française de nos jours. -- Dans l'enseignement d'une langue vivante, toute leçon, qu'elle soit consacrée spécialement à l'étude de la grammaire ou à celle de la littérature, doit être en même temps une leçon d'usage pratique. Il faut que les élèves des classes supérieures soient assez avancés pour que le maître puisse, sans inconvénient, leur parler la langue qu'il leur enseigne.
