Dana thought she had solved all the historical mysteries in her parents' house in Lawrence, Kansas. But now that her parents have turned the house into a bed-and-breakfast, Dana isn't so sure. Their first guests, the Burks, are a suspicious couple who snoop where they shouldn't, searching for a secret document linked to the Weavers, a Quaker family who lived in the house almost 150 years ago when the house was a stop on the Underground Railroad. As Dana combs the house for the hidden document, the story unfolds of thirteen-year-old James Baylor Weaver and his journey in 1857 to bring four slaves to freedom. James's travels will not only change his life but will bring about a horrible choice -- one that holds the key to the mystery Dana must solve before the Burks. Will she find the document in time? A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket. Inscribed by Author(s).

Add to basketThe original artwork for a science fiction classic, one of Podevin's earliest attempts at digital illustration, with painstakingly hand-painted details. Podevin has signed the verso in addition to his three signature ink stamps, and inscribed the front for the attention of Bantam Books's art director, Jamie Warren, dated "10/25/1991" next to his printed return address. Also included is an autograph letter signed by the artist and the original packing materials, hand-titled and with Podevin's embossed signature stickers. Stephenson's novel invented the "Metaverse" and popularized the term "avatar" in reference to digital beings. A Silicon Valley favourite, Snow Crash prophesied, inspired, and critiqued a staggering array of modern technology, while comprehending the complex relationship between the rise of big tech and the collapse of traditional social and political structures. Podevin planned for the cover artwork to be an entirely digital illustration. He scanned his initial sketches and digitally altered them using very early AT&T Rio graphics software. However, the sharp definition of the digital images did not carry through to the printed version, so Podevin retouched the entire artwork by hand, heightening the details of Ashera's attire and picking out the edges of each individual "pixel". The subsequent work is a suitably cyberpunk product of man and machine. Original photomontage prints laid down onto paper over artists' board with a matte base, heightened in acrylic and gouache, 605 x 501 mm, framed and glazed. Occasional abrasions to verso, a few faint marks to image and occasional cockling of matte base, else a beautifully preserved original work.
