Noch wichtiger ist aber, daß sie Gesichter festhalten: die runzligen Gesichter der Landarbeiter, die unausgeschlafenen und ungewaschenen Gesichter der Dorfkinder, die ein Geruch von Armut einhüllt. Lev Poliakov brachte mehrere tausend Negative zu diesem Thema inoffiziell auf diplomatischen Kanälen ins Ausland. Und so nannte er später seine Ausstellungen in Amerika: Gesichter Rußlands, Brücken in meine Heimat. Ich weiß noch genau, wie sehr uns seine "Demonstrationen" beeindruckten: Schneeregen und Wind reißen den Demonstranten die Hüte vom Kopf, reißen ihnen die Transparente aus den Händen, doch die Menschen gehen in gleichmütiger Pflichterfüllung weiter, an einem düsteren Gebäude auf dem Litejnyj Prospekt vorbei. Schon Mitte der sechziger Jahre lagen Poliakovs beste Aufnahmen aus diesen Themenkreisen vor. Er hatte sich in Richtung auf einen kompromißlosen Realismus entwickelt, wie es ihn schon vor dem Krieg gegeben hatte, freilich ohne dessen verlogenen Patriotismus, - zugleich war es ein poetischer Realismus, wenn es um die intimen, sensiblen Aspekte des armseligen sowjetischen Alltags ging. Zugleich war Poliakov damals ein begeisterter Ballett- und Theaterfotograf. Was für ein Kontrast zwischen den "eleganten Grazien" aus dem Kirov-Theater und den Menschen auf den Bildern, die in den Straßen Leningrads entstanden! Die plumpen, aufgedunsenen Gestalten betrunkener Frauen, die gerade vom Schichtwechsel aus der Fabrik kommen, die aggressiven Gesichter von Männern, die sich nicht mehr auf den Beinen halten können, die Schlangen am Warenhaus, die stumpfsinnigen Glatzen der unerschütterlichen Bürokraten (Seite 5) Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
