A pochi anni dalla censura di Galilei, l'oscurantismo di Roma mieteva un'altra vittima in Marchetti, la cui opera aveva circolato in Italia solo in alcuni manoscritti semiclandestini, benché lo stesso traduttore si fosse preoccupato di avvertire in una «Protesta del traduttore ai lettori» che di Lucrezio egli aborriva «gli empi suoi dogmi», mentre giudicava la sua poesia come «la piú robusta e la piú nobile».
