Illustrated with map. "One of the most important books in Japanese history to appear in several years.Young provocatively concludes that Japanese authoritarianism and empire-building from 1931 to 1945 were products of the nation's modernization . An uncommonly successful book with a big thesis." - Sheldon Garon, Monumenta Nipponica. "Young's extraordinary book will force historians of Japan to rethink their treatment of Manchukuo. Young's study also joins the new comparative scholarship on imperialism, which analyzes its transforming power not only on the colony but also on the metropole. She has thus created an essential work of scholarship for students of comparative imperialist history." - Parks M. Coble, American Historical Review. "What makes this book especially compelling is the author's ability to pursue .interpretative themes within a riveting narrative that holds the reader's interest from cover to cover. A gem of historical research, which . significantly enriches our understanding of Japan as an imperial power." - Stephen Large, Japanese Studies. "In well-organized chapters and lucic prose, this excellent cultural history shows how Japanese military, economic, and social imperialism in Manchuria affected the colonizer as well as the colonized. Enriching her study with evidence from a wide range of popular magazines and newspapers and making judicious use of the Japanese secondary literature, Young retells the familiar story of the 1931 seizure of Manchuria in the context of Japan's mass culture, illuminating how Japanese society joined the state in the production of empire .Young has contributed significantly to understanding state and society in wartime Japan." - S.A. Hastings, Choice. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Louise Young is Assistant Professor of History at New York University and Winner, John K. Fairbank Prize of the American Historical Association and Hiromi Arisawa Award of the American Association of University Presses.

Poster. Condition: Good. A suite of three WWII posters, 20" x 14". Each poster has been mounted to a thin cardboard. With some creasing, and occasional small losses from the edges. The largest loss is from the top right corner of the "palabra" poster, measuring 4" x 3". The posters also have a general layer of light glue-staining. Three American WWII posters depicting the themes of Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom of Speech. These posters were meant to highlight Franklin D. Roosevelt's four freedoms (here three), and to sway Latin American opinion against Germany, Italy, and Japan. The Spanish text at the foot of each poster reads: "One of the 4 liberties for which the allies fight." Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) was an American artist and graphic designer who worked mostly in the realm of poster art. He was born in Montana, however he moved to England and became an expatriate. He was very influential in Europe, however he was only known in the United States by a handful of those well versed in the study of design. Interestingly, despite his obscurity in America, in 1937 the Museum of Modern Art gave him a prestigious one-man show. At the time of the exhibition, copy agents were continuing the tradition of using posters with romantic imagery, and only a few designers were able to gain any attention from breaking free of this type of imagery. Still remaining in obscurity, Kauffer returned to England, only returning to New York City after the war broke out in 1940. He only received honors in the United States posthumously, when he finally received an AIGA award. Russian born American artist Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971) was most known for holding the art director's position at Harper's Bazaar fashion magazine during the years of 1934-1958. Like Kauffer, Brodovitch played a significant role in introducing the United States to a substantially simplified modern design, already popular in Europe. While at Harper's, Brodovitch used art created by Man Ray, Salvador Dali, and A.M. Cassandre. Brodovitch received an AIGA award in 1987. Three boldly modern posters created by two artists who helped pioneer the modern poster in the United States, with its symbolic imagery and social relevance.

Vintage poster for the 1989 dance performance choreographed by Louis Falco, held at the Tanz-Forum der Oper der Stadt Köln on May 9, 1989. Featuring music by Bruce Springsteen (arranged by Hajo Stahl), libretto by Falco and Kitty Troll, and set, costume, and poster design by Jack Brusca. SIGNED and dated in the year of the production by Brusca. Louis Falco began his distinguished dance career in the late 1950s, while in his late teens, under Charles Weidman and José Limón. He would go on to perform with Flower Hujer, Alvin Ailey, and Donald McKayle, and in 1967 made his debut as a choreographer with the dance piece "Argot." In 1972 Falco formed his acclaimed Louis Falco Dance Company, and through the 1980s worked with various other repertory companies as well as collaborations with Giorgio Armani, Andy Warhol, Tom Waits, John Lurie, and others. The first choreographer to work in commercials, Falco also choreographed for film and music videos in the 1980s, and is perhaps best remembered today for his work on the film "Fame" (1980), directed by Alan Parker. Jack Brusca was a New York artist whose work sat at the intersection of surrealism, pop art, and neo-realism. Brusca won critical praise in 1991 for his set and costume designs for Falco's ballet "Escarpot," performed by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater at City Center in New York. His work is today held by the Whitney Museum and others. Both Falco and Brusca died of complications from AIDS during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York in 1993, at the ages of 51 and 56, respectively. 23.25 x 33 inches. Very Good plus. Add to basketEight numbers of Das Plakat, a pioneering and richly illustrated journal, "generally considered to have been the most influential journal ever produced on the art of the poster" (History of the Poster, p. 17). Das Plakat was the journal of the Verein der Plakatfreunde (The Society for Friends of the Poster), an association of poster dealers, collectors, and designers founded in Berlin in 1905. It began in 1910 as Mitteilungen des Vereins der Plakatfreunde, adopted the title Das Plakat from January 1913, and ran through 1921. "Das Plakat soon became the most important periodical about the newly emerging field of commercial graphic design in pre-First World War Germany and beyond. Das Plakat was a luxurious publication filled with rich, full-colour and black-and-white reproductions of posters and modern graphics. Given its sophisticated content and high-quality reproductions, Das Plakat quickly became a central forum in Germany for introducing and debating graphic arts and advertising related matters" (Salsbury & Iskin, p. 170). Art / Print / Poster First Edition
Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Isabel and Monroe Smith, a married couple from Northfield, Massachusetts, started the American Youth Hostel movement in 1933 after gaining inspiration from Richard Schirrman's German Hosteling Organization. The movement grew quickly, with thirty hostels operating throughout New England within the first year. The first hostel was the Northfield Chateau, a large mansion on Birnham Road that was eventually demolished in 1963. The network of chaperoned hostels created the opportunity for safe bicycle-based travel, as shown in the posters offered here. Offered here are three early posters from the movement, designed by Isabel Smith, each with her signature in the image. All posters are variations on the cycling theme. One of them states that "When the grand day's bicycling is done no fare can compare with the Royal 'Hostellers' Own." Smith's design aesthetic is quite accomplished, and we are surprised to find no examples of these in institutional collections. Overall a visually compelling group, uncommon. Includes: Bicycle for Adventure on the Youth Hostel Trail. Holyoke, Massachusetts, c. 1939: Valley Litho Inc. Lithographed poster, 19 x 25 inches; Take to the A.Y.H. Trail. Northfield, 1939: American Youth Hostels . Lithographed poster, 17 x 22 inches; Hostellers Know.Northfield, 1939: American Youth Hostels Inc. Lithographed poster, 17 x 22 inches. All are signed "Isabel" in images. Excellent condition overall, with some toning small chips and various wear to margins, but overall quite well preserved.
