Very good with a few handling creases along right margin affecting the first three pages, small closed tears at both upper and lower spine, faint crease at upper spine affecting all of the pages, and a small area of paper loss at lower left tip of front cover. Pages remain vibrant and colorful.

Nummer 27 von 150 nummerierten und von Heimrad Prem in Blei signierten Original-Farbsiebdrucken auf weißem Karton. Blatt aus Künstlerkalender, der als Jahresgabe des Kunstvereins Hannover 1970 herausgegeben wurde. Maße Blatt/Abbildung: 59,0 x 41,0 cm. Sehr gutes Exemplar. The print run of the present issues, each containing original prints, ranges from 30 to 100 copies (the total edition, including an unillustrated text edition, ranging from 100 to 200 copies). The curator Klaus Hoffmann succeeded in attracting some of the most prominent West German artists of the 1960s to contribute to this small exclusive journal. Of particular note is the contribution by Frieder Nake, who, only one year after his first exhibition with Georg Nees in Stuttgart, provided an original plotter drawing for Issue 18. Nake was a mathematician and student of Max Bense in Stuttgart. Together with Michael Noll and Georg Nees, he was one of three pioneers of the so-called Group 3N. They were among the first to use computers and graphomats to create graphics. Nake had completed his doctorate on probability theory and was a research assistant at the computer center of the Technical University in Stuttgart for many years. For him, graphics was above all a method of mathematical research. His works represent experiments in which he attempted to replace the artist's creativity or intuition with random numbers, which ultimately are not random but rather probabilities defined by Nake. This principle is illustrated, for example, by his work "Hommage à Paul Klee" (1965), in which the computer generates images that resemble those of Paul Klee. However, these images are not reproductions of existing works by Klee. Nake defined individual pictorial elements as parameters, which were then distributed across the image plane by the computer in a calculated number and arrangement. As a member of the Stuttgart School, he was among the pioneers within Bense's circle who contributed to the establishment of computer art. He participated in all of the major exhibitions of the period, including Cybernetic Serendipity (London, 1968), Computerkunst: On the Eve of Tomorrow (Hanover, 1969), Tendencije 4 (Zagreb, 1968), and the Venice Biennale (special exhibition, Venice, 1970). He ended his active work as a computer artist as early as 1972. (D. Becker, AKL XCI, 2016, p. 481). It is noteworthy that Nake contributed to the present issue not only one of the numbered and signed plotter drawings but also a text in which he explains his approach in unusually accessible language addressed to artists. The very first sentence is a provocation in the tradition of Bauhaus industrial design, ultimately culminating in an apology for the coming "AI art": "I often (almost always) find synthetically manufactured materials more beautiful than old ones that are somehow cobbled together by hand. In any case, they are cheaper. I do not see why it should not one day be possible for pictures produced artificially (that is, by machines) to be more beautiful (whatever that may mean) than those produced 'naturally.' (.) I can imagine that a comparison will one day be drawn with the invention of the mechanical loom and the weavers' uprisings." Nake identifies two opposing poles at work in the computer-generated art of the future: the chance element of "Action Painting" and the "coolest (.) scientific planning of image production." He further predicts that "subjectivism in art will largely disappear." He goes on to argue that images are "consumer goods (.) like toilet paper, shoe heels, underwear, books (.)." Nake also already has a conception of what will become of artists: "those who today do what machines will then do will simply do something else, if they are able to do something else (.)." (transl. after Pe 18, pp. 31-32) "Pe", however, was not a journal devoted to computer art. Rather, the common thread running through the journal was Klaus Hoffmann's theory of the "New Ornamentation" (Neue Ornamentik), which brought together highly divergent artistic positions under a single aspect. As Hoffmann writes in his monograph of the same title: "The essence of ornamentality is that it is encountered simultaneously in different movements - in scriptural painting, Pop Art, Optical Art, Post Painterly Abstraction, and so forth." In advancing this concept, Hoffmann participated in a broader debate over a new understanding of modernism that sought to move beyond the discipline's self-definit.
