[198 x 112 x 21 mm]. vi, [iv], 256 pp. Bound in the original purple cloth, the covers with a blind blocked border and the front blocked in gilt, yellow endleaves. (A little faded and slightly bumped). Previously published in 1847. A very good copy. With the bookseller's label of Dorman of Northampton and bookplate of Lady Davy. Jane Kerr (1780-1855) married Shuckburgh Ashley Apreece in 1799 but he died in 1807. His widow then made her mark on society, as her distant cousin Walter Scott said, by taking "the blue line, and by great tact and management actually established herself as a leader of literary fashiom". In 1811 she moved from Edinburgh to London and was hotly pursued by Humphrey Davy. They married in 1812, three days after Davy received a knighthood. Her wealth enabled him to retire from routine work and devote himself to chemical researches. The marriage "was not a happy or comfortable union, each party having been rather too accustomed to adulation" (ODNB), but they were together when Sir Humphrey died in Geneva in 1829. Lady Davy continued to travel and entertain and Scott wrote of her "as a lion-catcher, I would put her against the world". She was buried at St. Sepulchre's Church in Northampton.

Oblong folio. (10 1/8 x 13 3/4 inches). 28 pp., 24 aquatint plates, 14 of which are hand-coloured. The plates bear the imprint "1810" Contemporary half red morocco, paper boards, spine with ruled lines, red morocco lettering piece on upper cover An exquisite manual on flower painting which serves not only as a visual delight but also a fascinating insight into the 19th-century art of sharing and mastering creative techniques. Rare, with OCLC sighting six examples. In A Practical Essay on Flower Painting, Edward Pretty, drawing master at Rugby School, guides artists through the delicate art of floral painting with a series of 24 aquatint plates. Organized to instruct progressively, the plates show the colouring of flowers in stages, from uncolored outlines to partial and full color, demonstrating how to skillfully manage shading and color to achieve lifelike detail. Pretty emphasizes the challenge of depicting shadows, an essential skill for rendering dimension and depth, which he introduces gradually using Indian ink. With a color chart and several plates, Prettys work was a valuable resource for aspiring artists of the early 19th century, reflecting a time when instructional manuals played a crucial role in spreading artistic knowledge to a broader audience. In an era before widespread access to formal art education, such publications guided amateurs and professionals alike through detailed techniques and practices. Bridson, G. Plant, animal & anatomical illustration, C437.
