Small octavo, pp. [i-ii] iii-iv 5-127 [128: tailpiece], woodcuts by the author, cloth. First edition. The author's first collection of short fiction for adults, preceded by a collection of children's stories. Eleven stories, roughly half of which have fantastic elements. The most interesting are "Other Music," about a musician writing to his wife to explain his incipient migration to another dimension that offers sights, sounds and sensations utterly unlike those of ordinary reality; and "Beds," which presents a young girl with a seemingly irrational fear of beds that others have slept in: it turns out they have the ability to impress on her the personality of their former occupants. Nicely written material with a sharp eye for visual details. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992) or Day, Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature. Binding a bit leaned, a very good copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with light wear at edges and background rubbing. (#134440).
