Mass market paperback. Condition: Near fine. First Edition. The UK edition of Stephen King's third Bachman book, a novel about a man driven to extremes when his son dies, his wife leaves, his job is threatened, and his house is slated for demolition to put in a new road. Roadwork "was written between 'Salem's Lot and The Shining and was an effort to write a straight novel.something serious. It was also an effort to make some sense of my mother's painful death the year before-a lingering cancer had taken her off inch by painful inch. I suspect Roadwork is probably the worst of [the Bachman books] simply because it tries so hard to be good and find some answers to the conundrum of human pain"-Why I Was Bachman. [8], 273, [1:blank], [6:ads] pages. £1.50 rear cover price. First edition (first printing with "First NEL Paperback Edition June 1983" on the copyright page). Near fine. With "New $4.50" pencilled on the first blank, apparently suggesting this copy was imported to the United States.

Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Very good. First Edition. A recently filmed novel set in a dystopian America where each year 100 men are forced to walk at a steady four miles per hour; if they slacken their pace, they are shot. According to King's essay, Why I Was Bachman, this is one of the two good novels (the other is Rage) he wrote before Carrie. He started Rage in high school; this is the first novel he finished, in 1967, when he was a college freshman. [10], 245, [1:blank] pages. Signet J8754. Cover price of $1.95. First edition (first printing with a numberline ending in 1). Very good, with a crease to the upper right front corner, a touch of fading to the spine, light soiling to the rear panel, and light staining to the page edges. Probably better than it sounds.

Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. Uncorrected Proof. An advance reading copy in black wrappers with white lettering. Two versions are known, one with an A above the publisher's imprint on the spine, and this version, without the A. This book came out after King had been identified as Richard Bachman. The conceit of its publication is that this manuscript was found after Bachman "died" of cancer. This advance copy is labeled "unrevised and unpublished proofs" on the first page. 475, [1:blank] pages. Preliminaries including in pagination. 6-1/16 by 9-1/4 inches. A very good copy with the typical light scuffing and wear to the fragile black covers.

Mass market paperback. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Stephen King's fourth book (published in the same year as The Shining), a school shooting thriller that he no longer allows to be republished. It was published as a massmarket paperback original destined for sale in drugstores and supermarkets. According to the essay, Why I Was Bachman, King began writing the novel called Getting It On, which ultimately became Rage, while he was still in high school. [10], 212, [2:ads] pages. Signet W7645. $1.50 cover price. First edition (first printing with "FIRST PRINTING, SEPTEMBER, 1977" and a numberline ending in 1 on the copyright page). The lower edge of the front cover has light surface loss, there's a bit of creasing to the spine, and a water spot on the yellow fore-edge. Previous bookseller's note "$50 1st ed." on the first page-that will suggest how long ago the previous owner bought it.
Mass market paperback. Condition: Near fine. First British edition. Stephen King's fourth book (originally published in 1977), a school shooting thriller that he no longer allows to be republished. It was published as a massmarket paperback original in both the US and the UK. The British version is much scarcer than the American. According to the essay, Why I Was Bachman, King began writing the novel called Getting It On, which ultimately became Rage, while he was still in high school. [10], 21, [1:blank], [2:ads] pages. First UK edition (first printing with "First NEL Paperback Edition February 1983" on the copyright page). Small smudge and faint letter S on the front cover, else very near fine. Unread. This copy is priced "$4.50 NEW" in pencil on the first page. Your cataloguer has also seen copies with a $4.50 price sticker. Presumably since the book was out of print in the US by 1983 some enterprising book wholesaler imported copies.
