Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1925 first edition of this landmark battlefield guidebook, which served as one of the definitive early texts for First World War veterans, widows and grieving families journeying back to the battlefields of Flanders, helping them to locate where loved ones fought or were laid to rest. Bound in gr…ey card with black text on the front board and spine, it includes two large removable military maps tucked inside a rear cover pocket, together with two fascinating additions - a compliments slip from the Ypres League accompanying a receipt for the purchase price of 5 shillings received from Mrs C Bates, possibly a grieving widow or mother planning to visit the battlefield. Ixpp with Preface by Field Marshall The Earl of Ypres and Contents, then 89pp with 6 coloured and half tone photographs and sketches and a detailed plan as well as the aforementioned maps. It balances sombre battlefield history with street-level guidance, charting a literal path through the ruined and rebuilding landscape of Ypres. In very good condition, front board slightly creased and sunned, ends of spine and corners lightly bumped, some slight scattered foxing but otherwise bright, tight and clean. Maps fully intact - perhaps Mrs Bates sadly didn't ever get to use them.
