The mature green bananas were irradiated using Cobalt-60 as the source at different dosages of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 kGy. The mean life of both the experimental and control group of fruits was analyzed under ambient conditions. For all the treatments the microbial potential, the decay percent and the ripening behavior of the fruits were recorded. Results revealed that the applied radiation doses reduced the decay, delayed ripening process and greatly inhibit the microbial growth (total bacterial and fungal count) thereby enhancing the shelf life of bananas. Irradiation dose of 1.0 kGy was found to be the most effective dose to positively maintain the stored bananas under ambient conditions. The shelf life was enhanced by 14 days. 104 pp. Englisch.…

Los plátanos verdes maduros se irradiaron utilizando cobalto-60 como fuente en diferentes dosis de 0,5, 0,75 y 1,0 kGy. Se analizó la vida media de los frutos del grupo experimental y del grupo de control en condiciones ambientales. Para todos los tratamientos se registraron el potencial microbiano, el porcentaje de descomposición y el comportamiento de maduración de los frutos. Los resultados revelaron que las dosis de radiación aplicadas redujeron la descomposición, retrasaron el proceso de maduración e inhibieron en gran medida el crecimiento microbiano (recuento total de bacterias y hongos), lo que mejoró la vida útil de los plátanos. Se determinó que la dosis de irradiación de 1,0 kGy era la más eficaz para mantener en buen estado los plátanos almacenados en condiciones ambientales. La vida útil se prolongó en 14 días.…
