Set of four postcards. 9 x 14cm each. Trifle browned at the back, a very good set. "Tsingtau" (Qingdao) was under German occupation from 1898 until it was captured during WWI in 1914. The postcards feature landscape portrayals of a brewery and slaughterhouse likely built under German rule. On the back "Weltpostverein" and "Union Postale Universelle", the naming of today's Universal Postal Union, are printed at time in multiple languages.

This 1938 Qingdao city map shows street names in Chinese characters and location of Chinese and Japanese public buildings, such as the hospital, shrines, Japanese primary schools and high schools. The 3 inset maps show railway and transport routes as well as outskirts of the city.

A souvenir of German's strategically and economically important Chinese port, addressed by a sailor in the Imperial German Navy to a correspondent in Hamburg. The panorama, by an unknown photographer, looks across the growing city to its natural harbour. During the late-19th-century foreign scramble for influence in China, Germany acquired control of Qingdao to protect against expanding Russian influence in north China. It administered the territory from 1898 to 1914. Qingdao's beautiful beaches and the nearby mountain of Laoshan made it a popular tourist destination. Four-panel collotype panorama (94 x 560 mm), captioned in brown, folding away to 94 x 142 mm, franked (stamp removed), remains of original mailing tape, addressed in neat manuscript. Light marking and toning, two folds repaired on verso with archival tape and tissue: very good.

First edition, sole printing, of this hard to find Mao-era tourist guide to the resort city of Qingdao, demonstrating that leisure travel and commercial advertising, including for the city's famous Tsingtao Beer, remained alive and well under Communism. Of the 10,000 copies originally printed, few have survived: WorldCat finds two and none are traceable in commerce. Qingdao emerged as a popular tourist destination in the late Qing and Republican periods when the city was administered as a German and then a Japanese colony. Its beautiful beaches, strong transport links, vibrant shopping scene, and nearby attractions continued to appeal to urban travellers during the 1950s and 1960s. The present guide, of a much higher production quality than most contemporary publications, was compiled by staff from the newspaper Qingdao ribao (The Qingdao Daily). It includes sections on architecture, museums, recreational sports, parks, and places of interest such as the beautiful mountain of Laoshan. This is a beautiful 1924 map of Qingdao or Tsingtao or Chingtao, located in the eastern Shandong Province of China, issued by the Imperial Japanese Government Railways. The map depicts the city, an important sea port and naval base and China's most livable city in great detail, noting streets, individual buildings, rivers, railways, and other topography. The great harbor is noted. The map also notes railway lines. An index in the top left quadrant notes the locations marked on the map. This map was issued as part of the 1924 Official Series Vol. D of the Guide to China and printed at the Toppan Printing Company.

This is a 1938 Koyama Kichiz? bird's-eye view map of Qingdao, China, and a fine example of the sketchbook mailer city views that were popular in Japan in the first half of the 20th century. This view was made shortly after the city's capture by Japanese forces in the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937 - 1945), and reflects the complex combination of German, Japanese, and Chinese influences on the city. A Closer Look This view is oriented towards the southeast, with Jiaozhou Bay (???) in the foreground and Mt. Lao (?? , now a national forest) at left. Text boxes indicate important sites such as train stations, consulates, parks, large factories, and hospitals. One box at center-right has been left blank. This is likely the former German governor's mansion ( Gouverneurspalast or ???), which had been the headquarters of the Japanese occupation of Qingdao from 1914 - 1922, a role it resumed in 1938 - 1945. It is worth taking note of the large Shinto Shrine at center-left, built atop Mt. Zhushui (???) in the late 1910s after Japan's seizure of the city from Germany during World War I. A regular feature of cities in the Japanese empire, these massive shrines served both a religious and political function, and were the site of huge, mandatory ceremonies to revere the emperor. The Qingdao Shrine was converted into a 'martyrs' shrine' (???) after Japan's surrender in 1945 and then demolished after the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, whereupon it became a public park. Aside from the Shinto Shrine overlooking the city, the Japanese presence is reflected by Japanese factories, including a cluster of textile factories at left in the foreground, a Japanese cemetery behind the Shinto Shrine (?????), and a set of Japanese shipping companies near the port in the foreground. Attached to the view on the front (recto) is an overhead map of the same area, dated June 5, 1938 with a note of permission from Japanese army and naval intelligence units, the Japanese consulate, and the Kempeitai (???). Verso Content As was standard with sketchbook mailers, the verso includes photographs (in this case a large panorama roughly oriented in the same direction as the view) and basic information about the city. Sections on geography and history, climate, urban life, maritime and rail connections, trade and industry, sightseeing (??) both in the city and in the surrounding areas (??), are included. The German Legacy in Qingdao The city of Jimo (??, at far-left) near Qingdao has a long history stretching back over two thousand years, but the history of Qingdao proper only really begins in the late 19th century (when it was known as Jiao'ao ??). Reeling from repeated defeats by Western powers with superior navies, the Qing government sought means to improve its naval defenses and recognized the natural advantages of Jiaozhou Bay (a French fleet had anchored there during the Sino-French War in 1884). However, the German government and military came to the same realization soon afterwards, and used gunboat diplomacy to force the Qing to grant them a concession at Jiaozhou in 1897- 1898 (similar concessions with other foreign powers were negotiated simultaneously or soon afterwards). Germany had big plans for Qingdao and outfitted it with wide streets, stone architecture, a range of impressive government buildings, electrification, a sewer system, and a safe drinking water supply. As with other concessions and treaty ports in China, most of the population of Qingdao was Chinese, and the de facto or de jure exemption from Chinese law that these territories created allowed for myriad opportunities, for both good and ill ends. The legacy of the brief but eventful German era can still be seen in the urban layout of the oldest parts of the city, the remaining German-style buildings (including the railway station, at right-center), and, of course, in the storied history of Qingdao's relationship with beer.
