Der Sammelband, entstanden aus einer Tagung an der Berliner Charite, zielt darauf ab, dem schwer fassbaren Begriff des Selbst aus verschiedenen Perspektiven Konturen zu verleihen. In der Psychiatrie und Psychoanalyse zeigt sich, was es bedeutet, man selbst zu sein, am besten durch Phanomene des Selbstverlusts. Die Betrachtung des Pathologischen dient nicht dem Ruckschluss auf ein normales Selbstverhaltnis, sondern dem Nachweis der Labilitat und Prekaritat des psychischen Selbst. Neurowissenschaftliche Untersuchungen belegen, dass die hirnphysiologischen Grundlagen von Selbstbezugen als komplexe Prozesse verstanden werden mussen, die ein Verhaltnis zwischen Organismus und Umwelt herstellen. Abschliessend beleuchten kulturphilosophische Beitrage das Selbst als Produkt zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen und gesellschaftlicher Strukturen. Der Band enthalt Beitrage von mehreren Wissenschaftlern, die unterschiedliche Aspekte des Selbst untersuchen.
