HB. 2 vols, royal folio (510x325mm), half leather, worn, stained and defective, boards detatched, lacking spines. Frontis heavily stained and torn. Some soiling and spotting throughout, text and plat…es stained in places, sometimes heavily (approx. 10 plates). A few plates torn mostly without significant loss; some plates (approx. 8) in Muscles more extensively torn, a couple torn right across the plate, several with some loss. One plate is a replacement loosely inserted (margins frayed), from another copy [Viscera, plate 30]; one plate lacking [Muscles, plate 29]. Although this set has obviously been heavily used, and sustained some damage, many of the plates are still largely clean and most are finely hand-coloured (the 26 uncoloured plates were probably never issued coloured). This work is made up of five Divisions: The Muscles of the Human Body, 1836; The Vessels of the Human Body, 1846; The Nerves of the Human Body, 1839; The Viscera of the Human Body, 1840; The Bones and Ligaments of the Human Body, 1842. All are first editions, except Vessels which is a slightly later reprint (first published 1837).Originally issued in 104 fascicles between 1836 and 1842 with large lithographic plates, available plain or hand-coloured, and arranged in five divisions. A feature of the work is its ambitious illustration programme. Plates were drawn by J. Walsh and William Bagg (1804-1869), a portrait painter and scientific illustrator, transferred to stone by William Fairland (b. 1806), and printed by some of the foremost London lithographers of the period: Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850), Graf & Soret, and Fairland. The completed set formed two folio volumes totalling 1,361 pages, available in 1842 at £12 plain, or £20 coloured. As many medical students could not afford the subscription for all the fascicles or to purchase the full set, and plates were used for teaching purposes, complete copies, especially with plates coloured, are rare.Welcome IV p. 452.Jones Quain, (1796-1865) was a leading anatomist and Professor of General Anatomy at University College, London. He collaborated with the surgeon William James Erasmus Wilson (1809-1884), then lecturer on anatomy and physiology at the Middlesex Hospital, to produce one of the great 19th-century anatomical atlases. Quain and Wilson's A Series of Anatomical Plates combined striking lithographic illustrations with explanatory 'physiological comments'.

Impressively illustrated throughout with hand-coloured anatomical lithographs, this is the very scarce first edition of the first volume of Quain and Wilson's study of human anatomy. Volume I only of the very scarce two volume first edition of this work. The first volume of an impressi…ve two volume study of human anatomy, edited by Jones Quain and Erasmus Wilson, in which detailed anatomical description accompanied impressive plates. Volume I is divided into three parts, covering the bones, ligaments, muscles and viscera of the body, with individual title pages. 'The Bones and Ligaments', 1842, illustrated with nine hand-coloured lithographs, and twenty-one monochrome lithographs, totalling 30 plates. Collated, complete. 'The Muscles of the Human Body', 1836, illustrated with fifty-three hand-coloured lithographs, and one monochrome lithograph. Collated, complete. 'The Viscera of the Human Body', 1840, illustrated with twenty-six hand-coloured lithographs. Collated, lacking three plates. These impressive plates were drawn by J. Walsh and William Bagg, transferred to stone by William Fairland, and printed by some of the most celebrated lithographers of the period. Rebound in library cloth, with endpapers renewed. Pencil library notations to title page head. Published in fascicles, and with the plates often removed and used for educational purposes, complete volumes are exceptionally scarce. Rebound in full cloth, with endpapers renewed. Bumping to back strip tail, with light rubbing to boards. Hinges strained, but firmly held. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright, with handling marks throughout. Pencil inscriptions to title page head. Small losses to fore edges of leaves, growing more significant to the rear of the work. Tide marks to perimeters of leaves to 'Bones and Ligaments'. Lacking three 'Viscera' plates. Very Good. J. Walsh and William Bagg (illustrator). book.

Ffep, blank, title, 67 numbered pages and 32 interleaved plates, blank, rfep See G-M13300, Jones Quain (1796 1865), five volumes on anatomy in folio, from which this book is a reprint of the volume on visceral anatomy: The most ambitious 19th century English anatomy illustrated by lithography. Some copies were issued with hand-colored plates. The five volumes, containing a total of 201 plates, describe the muscles, blood vessels, nerves, viscera, and bones and ligaments. Wilson designed the plates for this work, and signed some of them, but the plates were actually drawn by other artists, including J. Walsh and William Bagg, a portrait painter in London. Wilson also co-edited the second through fifth volumes. The section on the anatomy of the nerves is especially notable, with thirty-eight plates, including ten elegant colored plates of the brain and spinal cord, and a stunning colored plate showing the distribution of the eighth pair of nerves. Quain, along with Erasmus Wilson (1809-1884), originally published their anatomical drawings in five volumes (1836-1842). Regarding that set, Heirs 887 states, This elaborate series of anatomical plates and accompanying descriptions ranks with the best nineteenth-century representations. Quain was an anatomist and teacher of some note whose Elements of descriptive and practical anatomy (1828) went through eleven editions. Wilson, who co-edited the second through the fifth volumes, was a dermatologist and philanthropist whose fame rests largely on the role he played in the demise of flogging in the British army. (Heirs 887). See also G-M 410, regarding Quain s 1828 book: Among the most important of the English textbooks on anatomy. An eleventh edition was published in 1908-29. Joseph Maclise, 1815-1880. Heirs of Hippocrates 954: "Maclise was a student of Samuel Cooper and a prominent London surgeon." See also G-M 13302: "The drawings of Maclise for Quain's Anatomy of the arteries and for his own Surgical anatomy are indeed done, as Quain wrote, with spirit and effect. These figures of anatomical dissection seem lifelike; in many plates the figure is shown as a torso, or a bust, or as a full-or half-length figure. The faces seem to be a gallery of portraits, perhaps of visitors to the 1851 Great Exhibition. They are mostly young men with fine hair-bearded, clean-shaven, or mustachioed, with or without sideburns; occasionally there are remarkably handsome black men. Many appear god-like. This is indeed 'high' art, only incidentally of an anatomical subject. If the analogy is not too far-fetched, Maclise's drawing may be compared with the work in different media of the English Romantic poets or of the composer Berlioz. The same comparisons have been made in relation to the work of the Victorian artist Daniel Maclise (1806-70), Joseph Maclise's older brother. They remained close, traveling in Italy together, and sharing houses in Bloomsbury and Chelsea" (Roberts & Tomlinson p. 564).
