Full-Leather. Condition: Fair. F de la Mare Richart (illustrator). A fair to good set in 2 volumes, in contemporary full leather binding.M Jean de la Quintinye was trained as a lawyer, but is famed for his skills in kitchen gardening. He was commissioned by Louis XIV to create a new kitchen garden for Versailles - which can still be visited today. He is said to be the first gardener to advocate pruning young fruit trees hard to ensure better growth and fruiting for the future. This set is in contemporary speckled calf bindings with raised bands and gilt decoration and titles to spines. The bindings are sound but worn, with wear to corners, edges and the top and bottom of the spines. The gilt is particularly worn on Vol I. Vol II has some cracking to the top of the front joint. Both have some library numbers to the front pastedowns and a small early ink signature to the fep. Both have a round stamp of the 'Societe de Lecture de Geneve' to the title page. Paper has light toning throughout. Text with decorative headpieces, endpieces and illustrations. Vol I: frontispiece portrait of de la Quintinye; title page in red and black; Dedication au Roy 4pp; Poem 5pp; Idyll to Quintinye 7pp; Preface; blank; folding plate; text in 3 parts pp 1-310; further folding plate; Table of chapters pp 311-316; fin. Vol II: Title page (with some reference numbers); text in 3 parts pp 3-265 with 6 plates (one large folding); table of chapters pp 266-271; fin; Traite de la Culture des Orangers pp 273-318; table of chapters p 319; 3 plates; title page - Nouvelle Instruction pour la Culture des Fleurs 1695; table of chapters 2pp; text pp 1-140; fin. Full Leather. Condition: Fair. Second edition, corrected. Illustrated with a frontispiece and nine engraved plates (of which eight are folding), [Apparently lacking one plate], small octavo, pp [iv], xxxv, (i), 43,[iii], (4), 35-309, (vii), much of the text rather browned and age-toned, a fair few signs of use, though all very tight, the first fifty pages or so have a fair anount of pencil notes and underlinings (see illustration), with a little more on pages 179-199, contemporary calf, rubbed and cracked but sound, rebacked with a fairly recent calf spine, raised bands, new endpapers, (apparently by Bayntuns). The folding plates are rather worn and creased, occasionally frayed at the margins; two have old sellotape repairs, and one is rather badly torn across but without loss. The pagination is erratic, and appears incorrect, but it actuall ties in exactly with the contents pages at the rear. In this copy "An advertisement of J. Evelyn, Esq.", as mentioned by Blanche Henrey, is bound immediately after the title page. LACKING ONE PLATE. {Quintinie was in charge of the royal fruit and vegetable gardens under Louis XV. "His book shows his deep knowledge of every aspect of kitchen gardening" - Taylor. George London and Henry Wise were garden designers and nurserymen, and formed one of the most important garden design practices in the history of British gardening. They designed formal gardens very much in the tradition of Le Notre, and London was also royal gardener to William and Mary.].

Full-Leather. Condition: Good. First English edition. First English edition. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece, nine engraved plates (of eleven - so LACKING two plates), a few small wooducts in the text, many charming engraved chapter headings, folio, title page printed in red and black, pp (42), 188, 208, 4, 80, the top, bottom and fore-edge red, a few blemishes internally but overall very clean, the hinge before the frontispiece cracked but sound, contemprary calf, rebacked probably in the ealy nineteenth century, a little bumped and worn, the spine with more wear and a little splitting and fraying at the head and tail. An early un-named owner, obviously a knowledgeable and proficient gardener, has contributed half a page of manuscript notes on the first front blank, in which he questions, inter alia, why the author has not included mustard-seed in the list of all things that a kitchen-garden should contain; there are also neat marginal notes throughout in the same hand - these are in no way detrimental, and indeed enhance the book. Blanche Henrey 218. [One of the most influential books in the history of fruit culture. Evelyn's edition (though almost certainly the translation work of George London) not only brought the French work to an entirely new audience, it added short sections on the culture of orange trees and melons which were not in the original.].

8vo. pp. 1 p.l., xiv, [4], xv-xxxv, 309 i.e. 325], [7]. 11 engraved plates (incl. frontis.; 10 folding). 1 engraved text illus. contemporary paneled calf, rebacked with worn spine mounted, corners renewed (some light foxing & browning, light dampstaining to some leaves, some plates with few tears - no loss). cloth slipcase. Second Edition of George London and Henry Wise's corrected abridgement of the English translation of La Quintinye's Instruction pour les jardins fruitiers et potages. John Evelyn was credited with the English translation published in folio format in 1693 although Henrey (British Botanical and Horticultural Literature before 1800, Vol. I, p. 189) notes that George London may have had some hand in it. La Quintinye was successively responsible for the gardens of the Prince de Condé, Mademoiselle de Montpensier, the Duc de Montausier, and Jean-Baptiste Colbert. On March 17, 1670, he was introduced by Colbert to Louis XIV, who named him 'director of the fruit gardens and vegetable gardens of all the royal houses', a position created especially for him. In 1678, he began the creation of the new kitchen garden at Versailles, completed five years later in 1683. This garden is now classified as a historical monument since 1921. In reward for his services La Quintinye was knighted by Louis XIV in 1687. George London and Henry Wise who were responsible for the English abridgement became partners in Brompton Park Nursery in 1700, building it into the foremost Nursery Garden in England over the next quarter century. As leading garden designers of the period their names are associated with Chatsworth, Castle Howard and Melbourne. London held the appointment of Master Gardener and Deputy Superintendent of the Royal Gardens during the reign of William III while Wise was responsible for the upkeep of the Royal parks and gardens during the reign of Queen Anne. Our copy appears to be an unrecorded variant; while it is a stated second edition, the imprint makes no mention of the book being sold by Andrew Bell. Wing L432-432a. Henrey 219-220.

Oak Spring Pomona 1. Pritzel 5075. Originally published (posthumously) in Paris, in 1690. Probably the most influential book in the history of pomology, by the leading French gardener of the seventeenth century. For more than 20 years, beginning in 1665, La Quintinie worked as gardener to Louis XIV, rising steadily with ever-expanding titles. The potager at Versailles, constructed from 1677 to 1683, is the most famous of the fruit and kitchen gardens he oversaw in all the royal houses to meet the needs of the court: asparagus in December and strawberries in April, as well as the King's favorite figs. This book, published by La Quintinie's son Michel, introduced his methods to a wide audience, with detailed instructions for planting, pruning and espaliering fruit trees, and cultivating vegetables. Later editions, such as our copy, added to the directions for pruning and thinning out buds sections on melons and flowers, as well as advice on dealing with orange tress and La Quintinie's reflection on agriculture. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

2 volumes. The last authorized edition of the most famous manual on gardening and the cultivation of vegetables and fruits, first printed (posthumously) in 1690 and here finally for the Compagnie des Libraires Associés. Apart from many pirated editions, printed in Amsterdam (1692, 1697), Geneva (1695, etc.) and Paris (1715, 1716), authorized editions, following the imposing large 4to format, integral text and illustrations of the 1690 edition, were published in Paris in 1697, 1700, 1725, 1730, 1739, 1740 and the present 1756. This immensely popular and influential manual - translated into English by John Evelin (The compleat Gard'ner, 1693) and Italian, with adaptations in German and Portuguese - was a great European success and remained the symbol of the French classical arboriculture and horticulture throughout the 18th century. It contains detailed instructions for planting, pruning and espaliering fruit trees and cultivating vegetables, and was probably also the most influential book in the history of pomology. With the armorial bookplate of Jacobs Florentius Demory on the verso of both title-pages. Bindings a little worn, especially around the spine, corners bumped, head of spine a bit damaged, tear in one of the folding plates, but otherwise in good condition.l Pritzel 5075; Fanny Blanchard, Les éditions françaises et allochtones de l'Instruction pour les jardins de J.B. de la Quintinie (thesis, Lyon 2015), pp. 55-60; cf. Hunt 388; Oak Spring Pomona 1; Eliz. B. Rogers, Landscape design (2001), pp. 178, 195. Contemporary mottled calf, brown morocco spine label with title in gold, red edges. With 13 engraved plates (2 folding), 13 woodcut illustrations in the text, woodcut and engraved headpieces, tailpieces and woodcut initials. Pages: [8], 16, XVII-XLVIII, [12], 592; [8], 588, [28] pp.

Couverture rigide. Pritzel 5075.
